training my mum

my mum is early 50's and wants to loose some weight, she eats pretty good and mostly "clean" foods, but is a bit to partial to a glass of red wine.

shes in the gym when we go alot and shes got a pretty good grip on all the various excercises yet she is convinced if she starts lifting properly she will get bigger and muscly which she doenst want to do.

in addition to cardio does anyone out there have any ideas how she can strip bodyfat without adding to much muscle?

many thanks

Good for her Pete.

I wouldn't worry about her getting big and muscly. Without the use of steroids it will be very difficult for her to get big and muscly......particularly at the age of 50. The female body just doesn't create enough testosterone naturally for her to be able to get 'big'.

If you still can't convince her, get her to work in a rep range of 10-12.........most muscle growth occurs in rep ranges of 6-10 (sometimes lower) through overloading of the muscle.

Further, adding 'some' muscle will aid the body to burn more fat.

In terms of diet, lot's of fiber, clean food as you say, plenty of water, carbs earlier in the day, plenty of fibrous vegetables etc.....no real secrets there.

Cardio 3 times a week for 30 minutes, maybe more if she wants. If she can perform her cardio in the morning before eating, even better.

But try and convince her that she won'tget big ad bulky by training 'properly' because it's one of the biggest fallacies there is. It's much harder than people think.
