Training and eating

If you train first thing in the am, what do you suggest eating? I'm talking waking up at 5am and at the gym by 530.......thinking of just hitting my postworkout shake 30 minutes into my routine, any thoughts?

I used to never eat before my workouts, then I trained for (and completed) my first marathon - and now I HAVE to eat before I workout.

I like plain oatmeal (not Quaker - it's enriched and pretty high on the GI) with plain yogurt and some berries. I keep it under 300 calories.

Anyway, when I eat before a run or workout, I feel MUCH better than when I go on empty.

training and running are two entirely different movements.....I'd puke with oats sitting in my stomach, as I will have maybe 15 minutes to digest...need something light and lively....thanks for the reply though

Today I skipped my post workout shake (I have an mrp 1 - 1.5 hours prior) and just took some glutamine and aminois....then a nice size meal of protein and veggies about an hour later and feel much better! hhmmmmmmmm

Your options are pretty limited if you only have 15 minutes to digest. I can't stand to have too much in my stomach before I workout.

Post workout shake before, and one afterwards. i would go with something like 30-40 dextrose and 30-40 protein. No fat, as it will slow digestion.

Right now I take a MRP 1 hour before my training and/or cardio and then have a meal shortly after...figure I still have enough protein floating around from the MRP after my training, so I'm good to go with the hour window........
