Of course, if you were into circuit training (and didn't have a VERY good, sport-specific reason for being so,) I'd have to find out where you live, come by for a visit, and beat you senseless with a sack full of pink dumbbells.
I do two totals because of sport( i usually do some form of sport everyday!)
For me weights complement sport, not the other way around.
I used to do 3-4 workouts a week and little sport, but felt like a bloated pussy. All i was good for was going to the gym and lifting weights, i was soo unfit..i feel much better now, and not such a pussy doing isolation shity exercises.
I just do two workouts with compound basics and am gaining far more quality strength and muscle than doing a 'regular' bodybuilding routine.
I would definitely suggest a split.. with a split training routine you can focus on the intended bodypart with much more intensity and further develop it a lot more. I have seen guys do total body workouts and its just ridiculous trying to hit every muscle group in one day.

Good luck.
Maybe try something like..
day 1- chest, delts, tris
day 2- back, traps, bis
day 3- rest
day 4- quads, hams, calves
day 5- rest
i like the idea of a 3 or 4 day split...not only are you in the gym less when you go there, but it makes working out a part of your everyday (or every other day) life, which is a good thing...also, if you are in the gym for extended periods of time, that can have adverse affects on hormone levels, and take away from your training slightly...i dont know much on it right now, but it seems to make sense...
determine which bodyparts you want to work, and split them up throughout the week
