Has anyone here ever used it? Seizure/ headache medication.

I have been having problems with migraines and was prescribed imetrex which did not work so we switched to naprosen which did not work. So now we are trying topamax. I have requested a ct scan and was denied per my Doctor who wants to try this first.
Any way I was just wondering if anyone had any weird sides to it.

I know its not prescription...but have you tried excedrin migraine?

I swear that shit works better than any prescription migraine med...

works for me...

Try metoclopramide (Reglan) as well. It actually does wonders for migraines. I usually give patients 20 mg (intravenously) along with diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 25 mg to prevent any akasthesia.

Well I went ahead and started the topamax. I put it off for a bit as I was concerned that it would go ahead and interfere with work as far as dizzyness, ect..I read my med books and asked the doc that I work for and she said just try it..Obviously it is too soon to notice a change, but I have not had any migraines. This week is the week of hell, so this will test if it has kicked in or not. Although I doubt it has this fast. I am currently only on 25 mg only at bed for this week then on wednesday I up to 25 mg tab in the morning and 1 tab at bedtime. So far I am pleased. Just having to take a daily pill is the only thing that sucks

It's actually a pretty good preventive medicine for migraines from what I've read and heard from patients. Patients usually welcome an interesting side effect of the med: weight loss.

Except the bodybuilders might want weight gain.

It's very important that you keep a diet log to make sure that a diet allergy isn't triggering your migraines. A lot of people find that their migraines get better after eliminating certain foods. Excessive amounts of citrus (orange juice usually) will trigger my migraines.

The most common side effects to Topamax are loss of appetite and mild mental fogginess (I've been doing the transcription for a headache center for years).

I used to get skull-cracker migraines but very rarely, only once every three to six months or so. When I stopped eating all gluten I never got another one. I stopped getting all general "regular" headaches when I finally quit smoking.

The problem with finding diet related triggers that are intolerances as opposed to true allergies is sometimes the culprit is so ubiquitous you keep overlooking it (took me a LOOOOOONNNNGG time to figure gluten was an issue for me).

Anyway, good luck and feel better pretty lady!!! :qt:

This is so true, for many people it is food triggers. However in my case it is so different. It was first diagnosed as menstrual migraines however that changed when they increased in frequency.
I was told to take the med 1 week at 25 mg, then gradually increase however I am a little slow on the uptake here. I am just now upping it to 50 mg a day and I think that I am going to keep it this way until my 6 wk med check. I have been doing good and dont feel as though I need full amt to help, though I will call MD and not decide on my own.
I have not lost weight nor appetite, though I am hungry as hell one minute and unable to eat the next, which is lovely. I have had no other sides at all, which I like...

Thanks MuscleMom I appreciate it, beautiful lady!!

Well the slang term for topamax is dopamax. Meaning that many become a zombie after taking it. That is the largest reason to discontinue the med.

It is an interesting drug however, as it is one of the only and best drug for use with alcoholics who continue to use. They curtail their habits and also liver funciton and relative systems improve. It is the best drug for an active alcoholic to discontinue use. It also, along the same mental pathways reduces binge eating and cravings.

I think the method of action in laymen's terms is that it makes you a bit zombie-like. Maybe a bit like a buspirone reaction of feeling "washed out"

As far as treatment for migraines, I like a simple betablocker or anything that relaxes artery walls as it can be a spasm of the Circle of Willis, a traffic rouandabout of circulation in the brain. Of course, I am a cardiovascular guy. So beyond circulation, it is outside of my ken.

Then you just try out things that work as nothing works for just one person as it may be the circulatory as I mentioned or a TOTALLY completely different issue causing it. So play with meds like docs do

No, the topamax will not interfere with either one. You are fine. The only thing that topamax interfers with is sleeping medications, antihystamines, and birth control. You should have no issues with either clen or winny resulting from topamax use.

winny is a dht dirvative and works along the androgen receptors.

topamax enhances GABA-activated chloride channels. In addition, topiramate inhibits excitatory neurotransmission, through actions on kainate and AMPA receptors.

clen works along the beta-2

with anything talk to your doctor first but if you ask me they do not work on the same path ways and should have no effect on each other.

not trying to change the subject but do you know if wellbutrin would interfere with winny or clen?

Thanks

You should be fine with it, though you may notice that your heart rate increases or you may even notice some palpitations. If you do than I suggest chilling out on either the clen or the wellbutrin.
I seriously will advise you that wellbutrin sucks and is not that great, I have heard nothing but horror stories with interactions, complications, etc from many people. I do not think that you will have any issues as far as the winny or clen causing an issue but you may want to run this by someone who is more advanced and who has more knowledge in wellbutrin.

really? I have been on it for years and have never experienced anything bad. My naturopathic doctor gives it to me. I will keep that in mind though thanks. As far as being on too much stuff, I dont want to drop meds I have been on for years. I have show in a few weeks that is why I was asking.
