The "you need to eat a lot on steroids" myth

Guess what guys. If you're only burning 3000 calories a day and eating 6000 calories, you will get big....big and FAT. Steroids do not change this fact. Your goal should be to eat roughly the same amount of calories you are burning throughout the day. This way, the protein you eat will all be used to build muscle and not stored as fat which it what the body will do with any excess calories. Yes, even if you're taking steroids. If you want to eat more and get more muscle, then you need to exercise more to increase the calories you are burning. Basic physiology.

Something tells me the collective wisdom and experience of the thousands of people on this board will disagree.

Steroids build muscle from protein.

If I ate the same amount of calories I burnd everyday I would only eat 500 calories a day or something. I dont think so.

You got served OP!

lol. but really.. everything I have ever heard has told me that anabolism occurs (and steroids work) with excess calories and protein..

what are you basing this eat only what you burn nonsense off of?

people think dieting on steroids is a chore.....yes if you are cutting.....i personally could give a shit about cutting anymore......if i run a test, eq i'll still be get shredded....if you just increase protein intake steroids will work....easy as pie

The age old question how much protein is needed to build muscle? it varies from person to person,it taken me years to figuare it out,but I've learned over the years just how much and what foods I need to eat to achieve my goals...to each their own:)

I kind of see what your saying but I think you have it a little wrong. Roids change the normal physiological functions. Calories for someone on gear is not the same for someone who is not on gear. Once the bodies energy demands are met and calories are over consumed the body is in a anabolic state (anabolic meaning its going to convert smaller ingested molecules such as free fatty acids into triglycerides, glucose into glycogen, amino acids into protein.). One thing that you seemed to be confused about is that eating to many calories will lead to fat gain no matter the type of macronutient it is (Carb, Protein, Fat). Your statement is right to some degree but by no means is eating 3000 calories of amino acids the same as eating 3000 calories of Triglycerides. If you don't believe me try it and you will end up in a hospital from keto acidosis when you eat the fats. As far as eating the amino acids, the body has to waste a lot of ATP just to get it to convert over to glucose through gluconeogenesis. Once converted to glucose the body has to waste even more energy to convert it to triglycerides and store it in adipose tissue. so to sum it all up IT IS VERY HARD AND ENERGY REQUIRING FOR THE BODY TO CONVERT PROTEIN TO STORED FAT.

Now here is the main reason why your wrong about over consumption of calories. We all no that steroids add muscle mass but what the hormones are doing at the molecular level is INCREASING PROTEIN SYNTHESIS. When protein synthesis is high, and energy requirements are met your body will use consumed amino acids to synthesis new proteins. THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN IF ENERGY REQUIREMENTS ARE MET, meaning if you consume 3000 and burn 3000 calories you have accomplished nothing. Your body could give 2 shits if you wanna put on muscle or not when energy requirements are not being met. It is only when you over consume calories when you have a chance to put on muscle. And the steroids come in to play on what % of the over consumed calories will become muscle ( that is if you eat the right calories).

Sorry for any typos, just wrote this on the fly.

If this were true, then all the pro bodybuilders would not be eating 7000+ calories in their off season. Sorry, but you are wrong my friend. Steroids make use of the nutrients you put in your body more efficiently therefore faster. So you would need to eat more to take advantage of that effect.

You definitely need to eat tons of calories whether you are on or off steroids if you relly care about getting big and staying big.

The example of eating 3000 calories over maintenance is quite an exageration. Yes, if you did eat 3000 calories MORE than the body required to maintain weight, you would end up gaining lots of fat for sure.

Buy if you want to get huge and strong you need to be eat atleast 1000 calories over maintenance to continually get bigger and stronger.

Managing carbohydrates and insulin will also help control body fat storage.
