I dont understand the mentality that all labor jobs are subpar lazy dummies out there who want something for nothing.
My husband is an elevator constructor/repair/electrician. He is college degreed, and in his 5th year of school after college (that is 9 years total education) in I guess what you would call elevator school which is mostly gears, wiring , math, gravity, (lol) a buch of crap. The union requires that all of these guys get this education and thats what our union dues pay for. Think the next time you get in an elevator if you want some schmuck getting paid minimum wage being the guy who put it in.
The job is so hard on the body, that most workers must retire at 65 because their bodies simply give out on them. They enjoy their jobs because they are the type of guys who dont tend to like to wear those fancy suits and like to get their hands dirty.
The unions are there to protect them during layoffs and help find them work if they are laid off. They also protect us in seeing that they have good benefits and are paid a fair wage. I believe that his wage is fair for what he does, as its very very dangerous to be in an elevator shaft and a 1,000 lb counter weights flying past your head at 100 mph inches from chopping off your head.
I am not biased because my father is a business owner and I was raised in a republican white collar family. I can see both sides of the coin here, not all unions are greedy, not all union workers are lazy and stupid.
These workers get no respect. Thats why they need a union.
