Like Dial tone said Nero works well but converting videos to a DVDs that you can watch on your tv is time consuming.

like 4 hours with a fast machine.

no, it doesnt take that long. I've done it before with my Athlon 64 and it didnt take that long.

I am running a Core 2 Duo, E6400 clocked at 3.4ghz, shit should fly.

sorry, but nero sucks.

yes, it works...but it shouldnt take damn near 700 megs to create a burning program.

if you guys want to use bloatware, that's on you.

I use nero burning rom 6, have had better luck with it than 7.

hey, one thing that hasnt been discussed here is:

-different brands of dvd media.

-different colors, and whether or not those have anything to do with quality or storage life?

To start, I want to say that cheap dvds arent good to buy in general, but if you are going to get them, only buy them if you have a newer player, because old players have a hard time playing them. I got the 100 pack of Dynex dvds for $5 this year on Black Friday at Best Buy, and they suck!
So you get what you pay for, and you should always buy higher quality dvds whenever you can afford it :)

But I'm not sure which brands are considered the best brands. I'm researching this right now. Maybe p0ink or some other members have some more insight on this.

i wish there were a faster way to copy the whole thing but i have the same problem. try cutting out the subtitles and different sound versions. that helps. and maybe just copy the movie only and not the menu. that helps as well.

It would take that much longer to copy the menu and such, I've always cut out the unnessary stuff.

I figured out what my problem was, I had a DVD rom (for the ripping) and a DVD burner (for the burning), they were on the same IDE cable.

Well apparently the DVD rom was older or something because it wouldn't allow DMA mode, only PIO(which apparently is slow as shit).

I removed the dvd rom and just left the dvd burner set as the master and now it only takes me about 30 min to rip and burn a movie. which is still not the "rip and burn in 10-15 min" like most people.

The only drawback is that now I cant leave the machine to rip and burn for me, I have to be here to remove the movie and insert a blank disc.

ok, i havent heard anything on the color of the dvd (top or bottom) having anything to do with reliability. i think it is all just marketing and hype to have a dvd with a black bottom. i may be wrong, but i'm usually not.

holla.

as for brands of dvd's, i would use verbatim DVD-R
s for video and memorex dvd's for data. i have never had any problem with the two.

i have had issues with sony, value brand crap, and others. those two are golden.

why not drop like $40 and get an external USB drive if it means that much to you. personally, i dont think it is worth it, because i dont mind waiting the 12 minutes for a dvd to rip and then popping in a blank.

no sweat off of my back.
