Start going to the tanning bed at least 5 weeks out. I prefer High Pressure beds because they do not cause as much damage to your epithelial cells, so your epidermis does not slough off as fast, meaning your color lasts longer, leading to less overall visits to the tanning salon. You need that base tan so that when you put the color on it will look more natural. And it doesn't matter how dark you think you are from going to the tanning bed. You can't judge how dark you are with regular lighting. Once you get under those stage lights..., they will wash you right out. Trust me.
Don't get spray tanned. Buy yourself some of the old school regular Pro-Tan that you put on with the sponge brush. Also buy some Jan-Tana Hi-Definition Color. Follow these steps.
-Starting 7 days out from your show date, exfoliate your skin with a good exfoliating scrub and a loofah. Don't forget your back! After your shower apply baby lotion to your skin. Do this 3-4 times BEFORE the day BEFORE your show.
-Day before your show, apply one coat of Pro-Tan in the morning. Apply a second coat of Pro-Tan before bed.
-Wake up the morning of the show, shower off the excess Pro-Tan.
-Apply 1-2 coats of Jan-Tana Hi Definition Color, before your show.
-For posing oil, Hot Stuff by Pro-Tan is a good product. With your posing oil, you don't cover yourself with it ok..., rub it in like lotion once you get backstage. Once you start to pump up, and you get out under the hot stage lights, you will begin to sweat. Your sweat will mix with the oil and give you the "Sheen" you want. You don't want to "Shine," you want a "Sheen." Nothing worse than a guy with too much oil. You will look like a glazed doughnut under those lights.
-DON'T USE DEODORANT!!!!!!!!! I know this sounds crazy. But if you have deodorant on when you apply the tanning products..., your underarms, and any part of your skin that has ANY deodorant on it WILL TURN GREEN!!!! I know..., stinking sucks, but you are judged on how you look..., NOT how you smell.
I think I covered the basics. All variations aside, this is standard protocol for most experienced bodybuilders. I wish someone had laid this out for me before my first show. I looked like a pale ass glowworm onstage.
