Squats question.... you all know the answer.

Ever since I've been into the gym, I've heard and read people talking about how squats are the #1 exercise for overall mass building, and how you'll never be big if you don't squat.

I'm still open to the idea, but I really don't understand it.

Someone once said that if you put an inch on your legs by squatting, you'll automatically put half an inch on your arms. I don't see how that would work.

I studied Human Movement at the University of Western Australia so I know a little bit about the physiology of it, but I don't see how squatting could add mass to your chest, arms, shoulders and upper back.

Some have said it's because you use every muscle and supporting muscle to stablise yourself when you're squatting, and to keep everything in line. My response to that, is that it doesn't take a whole lot of effort, and doesn't fatigue a muscle much when it's only acting as a stabliser.

Obviously if you can't feel a pump or burn in your biceps when you're doing curls, you're doing something wrong and probably won't grow from it. So how could the rest of your body grow so much from squats if they're only keeping your body in line? That doesn't fatigue a muscle.

I'm still objective, but I can't understand it. If someone could tell me exactly how squatting can add hypertrophy to your arms, I'd appreciate it.

The reason as I have read and seen on many threads here and other sites is:
Squats release more GH than other smaller size muscle group exercises.
More Growth Hormone in the system = more grouth in the body.

Pls someone, 2nd the motion or refute...

Okay, well... I've heard something like that too. But I wasn't sure.

So GH and testosterone release are stimulated by exercise? I didn't know that.... well, I did.... but I thought it was a gradual thing. I was unaware that the difference between squatting and benching could substantially promote more homone secretion.

Anymore opinions on this?

squats are an allover mass builder because you don't just use your legs to do the motion.. balancing the weight and stabalizing yourself requires the use of all major muscle groups... that's why they're so effective... probably one of the best torso strenghtening exercises around IMHO

(I found squats, i found my abs.. (it's almost like finding god i guess :) )

University of Western Australia? Get your money back they didnt do a very good job educating you:think:

And your school should re-evaluate its grammar program.

I studied Human Movement, it's not specifically bodybuilding.

No offense...but how many in the faculty at your Uni can squat over 315lbs. Believe me I am going back for a degree in Exercise Science and I have come to realize that the teachers are just spitting out what they are told. Take what they say with a grain of salt...get in the gym and TEACH yourself.

Stop thinkin about it and do the work. If you are looking for a reason to not squat there are many out there...but if you want to grow then get your ass under the bar...does it really matter WHY it works??!

Actually, to me it does.

See, there's a guy at my gym who is the biggest person I have ever seen up close.... but he doesn't squat and never has because he has a bad knee. But he's still the biggest guy I've ever seen....

Anyway, I already said that Human Movement wasn't specifcally bodybuilding. If I knew everything about it, would I be asking a question? All I was saying, is that I've learned a little bit about biomechanics and molecular biology.... it's not a bodybuilding course.

I think "does it really matter WHY it works??!" is a pretty dumb mentality.
