Ever since I've been into the gym, I've heard and read people talking about how squats are the #1 exercise for overall mass building, and how you'll never be big if you don't squat.
I'm still open to the idea, but I really don't understand it.
Someone once said that if you put an inch on your legs by squatting, you'll automatically put half an inch on your arms. I don't see how that would work.
I studied Human Movement at the University of Western Australia so I know a little bit about the physiology of it, but I don't see how squatting could add mass to your chest, arms, shoulders and upper back.
Some have said it's because you use every muscle and supporting muscle to stablise yourself when you're squatting, and to keep everything in line. My response to that, is that it doesn't take a whole lot of effort, and doesn't fatigue a muscle much when it's only acting as a stabliser.
Obviously if you can't feel a pump or burn in your biceps when you're doing curls, you're doing something wrong and probably won't grow from it. So how could the rest of your body grow so much from squats if they're only keeping your body in line? That doesn't fatigue a muscle.
I'm still objective, but I can't understand it. If someone could tell me exactly how squatting can add hypertrophy to your arms, I'd appreciate it.
