you could be saving a young mans life.

Today was leg day at the gym. I did my normal warmup and got good and streatched out. I started off normal....squats of course. Did my warm-up sets and this young lad asks if he can work in with me. Now he looks like a high school football player so I figure I am gonna be ok and I am gonna need a spotter today cause I had already predetermined I was gonna try to go heavy. We get through a couple a sets and the weight is starting to get heavy( at least for me gotta remember the bum knee). So we get to 405 and I tell him to just make sure I dont get stuck but not to actually help me lift it just give me the help when needed to make sure I earn it basically. On my 7th rep I am going up very very slow. He tries to spot me and pulls us both backwards. The rack catches the weight before both he and I crash down backwards onto him. I hit the back of my neck on the bar literally kinda knocking my out for a few minutes. When I finally get my senses back he is saying sorry he lost his footing and fell.
The other gym employees are all around me now making sure I am ok and keep my job by not killing this young lad who is now laughing at how loud the noise was when the bar hit the rack.

Someone please give me a little humor on this as I sit here with the heating pad on my neck so the next time I see him I dont kill him.

it's kind of funny, but moostly scary. 405 is a lot for a hihschool kid to spot you with. im sure you learned your lesson though

lucky he didn't get you hurt, bro.

We're outta' here

offer to spot him on the bench, then when the bar is stuck on his chest, go get a sandwich!

there is no humor - you could've been hurt bad enough to curtail your lifting for the rest of your life.

It would depend on how it happened.

If he honestly lost his footing and it wasn't really his fault, then you can't be too mad at the poor kid.

On the other hand, if he was really checking out a hot chick in the cardio section or otherwise simply not paying attention to spotting you with 405lbs draped across your spine, then he's nothing short of a fuckstick.

Regardless, that's some dangerous shit bro...be careful.

BTW, I might be coming down your way soon. I'm usually down there once every summer...Myrtle Beach is da shit! You go clubbing down there much?

That is why I don't spot for or ask somebody I don't know to spot for me. Especially when working legs, you just never know what they will do. You are lucky you didn't get hurt worse. Just chalk it up to a lesson learned and leave it at that.

Well all thanks for the responses. The young man came and apologized to me today at the gym. I saw a doctor today to make sure there was no damage and the xrays came up negative and the diagnosis was a deep bruise to the C5 which should be healed in about 7-10 days luckily. I have learned my lesson and will only get people I know to spot me on anything. You would think after 12 years in the gym I would already know this but the kid looked strong as hell so I thought he would be a serious lifter. Now I know better.
