Last year, I went to the local YMCA and just looked around at the place to see if it was worth the membership. I went when it wasn't crowded (can't remember what time) and just had to see the weight room. Couldn't find it. So I went upstairs, and saw a track and cardio room, and a pittly little area with several Nautilus machines. As I was leaving, I ventured to the basement. Bingo. The big boy weight room. One guy was in there, I glanced around the machines and left so I wouldn't disturb him. He said, it was all right, and proceeded to show me around. The longer I talked with him, the less I liked him. This guy was a classic stereotype muscle head. He told me what each machine was for and proceeded to a racked barbell by the bench. 160# on an easy curl bar. He got under it and proceeded to quite literally bang out 8 reps. Off the rack, bang off the chest, up, bang off the chest, etc. I was pretty impressed at the time, because I had just started benching (70#on the olympic bar). This guy got around to asking what I was benching and I was honest. He laughed at me-HE.....LAUGHED....AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you get the point. Among things I'm motivated about, it's beating this guy at his own pittiful game. Don't get me wrong, I'm not this kind of guy to make fun of other people's progress, or 'how much you're benching', but I have zero respect for this guy's efforts, even though at the time he was at more than double my weight. I've seen people curl more for reps than his measly bench, and this guy was making fun of me. Do you think Fred Hattfield (1014# squat) laughs at people he helps train?
There's one in every gym. If you don't go to a gym, go a couple times and find this guy I'm talking about. Do your research and fine tune your own work out. When you've surpassed this monkey, and you will, go back when he or some one like him is there and do your normal thing. You'll totally blow their mind.
