I am currently in training to become a television news reporter and i was soo disappointed when i saw myself on camera yesterday. Anyone every feel like this, i felt like my face looked so fat and hated the way my hair looked - this is soooo frusturating trying to capture the right look - anyone have any ideas??? Anyone ever been in a situation like this before - i find it rather depressing :(

I've been there too. Sometimes I think we're really overly critical of ourselves. It seems easier quite often to look in the mirror and focus on flaws..especially people in fitness who are contantly evolving their bodies and looking for ways to improve.

Did anyone else give you feedback on it? Would you feel better if you cut your hair a little different or something along those lines? Is it possible that you're just not used to seeing yourself on camera yet and are being too hard on yourself? I'm sure you looked great. :)

Raina's right - we are our harshest crittic.

Why don't you go and have your hair done, have them do something totally new to your head. Darken/lighten is, change the syle, bangs, layers whatever.

well, one male reporter suggested i cut my hair a bit and add more lowlights, but i have curly hair and goign straight - i think it looks bad on me - especially on the camera - but it needs to look smoother - so much blonde is causing my hair to look dry - i've tried heat caps with protein treatments - have any other suggestions to get the dryness and shine back in my hair?

As far as my face, well I am trying to loose another 20 lbs and i am goign to start putting the yohimburn on my face - see if that helps any, and i'm going to try to do some more dramatic makeup, so perhaps it'll look like i'm wearing makeup - since normal makeup looks completely washed out on camera.

I just know that it really plays mind tricks with you and its so hard when you know you're working so hard ( i mean i went through a down time when i gained weight, and since i've dropped 25lbs in about 2 months now and i've stayed constant - now i need to up my intensity some more and hopefully this new challenge with cause some more fat loss and hopefully my face will look less round)

I just know that i'm sooo frusturated...but thanks for listening...is so good to know that when you're sad and body conscious there are people out there that will listen, understand, and take you seriously....so thanks :)

Anyone else have any other advice???? Anyone ever done television work and have any suggestions?

First off 25lbs - Great job!

Some salons have colored conditioners. They could darken your hair and condition it at the same time and because of hair's natural highlights you shouldn't look like you have a cap on your head.

How about dark stawberry blond or auburn hair?

I have a little TV and video experience but more so with the camera as I used to model a bit. The makeup that you wear on TV is like a gazillion times heavier than what one would use for a shoot as it is not a pic frozen for a moment in time but a moving picture. I dont think that more dramatic makeup is the answer, but something that is more defined. Is there a staff makeup person that you can consult? Makeup isn't all that difficult to master, just takes you having it done once with a result that you like and VIOLA - you can do it yourself. I dont think that as a newsreporter you want to look like a dragqueen. I would err more to the side of neutral/natural colors, just a better foundation and perhaps bringing your eyes out a bit. Definitely a better foundation and blusher is needed so you dont looked washed out. My coloring is dark but I have still looked washed out in certain video footage while looking just like a dragqueen in other scenes... LOL.

I also have curly hair but it is dark brown with natural red highlights. I was auburn for several years, but just went back to brown when my finances went down the crapper. There are many products that you can put in your hair to make the ends less dull and add shine at the same time, many are products that will not break your bank account.

Unless you can straighten your hair properly, I wouldn't try. (Read my "I am reminded why I do not straighten my hair thread LOL.) A good cut should serve you well. Not saying you have to give up all your femininity in the name of being taken seriously but I dont think you want big stripper hair either.

I do agree that perhaps some lowlights or a deep golden honey color as opposed to "look at me - me - me" platinum will do you better as it will most definitely flatter you more both on camera and off.

Dont stress too much either. I have looked at so many pics of me that I dont think flatter me AT ALL and so many others say, "You look BEAUTIFUL!". When all I can think is, "And you, my friend, NEED glasses!"

Kudos to you for the weight loss. Dont stress over the rest of it... Be confident. Confidence IS VERY DESIRABLE and will shine through in everything you do, regardless of how your hair looks or what your bf% is. This is not a fitness/bbing contest. It is so much more - IT IS YOUR CAREER. Yes, we all want to look our best most times but I think that people will definitely be more interested in your performance than what your bf% is or whether or not you have the perfect hair color. Dont you agree? I mean what was on your INSIDE is what got you the position in the first place and not how many backflips you could do while having perfect hair and nails at sub 8% bf... is it?

Think about my last sentence. I hope that puts this minor bump in the road of your career into perspective. ;)

I was having the same problem with dryness and blonde in my hair my suggestion is go back to your natural colour and get low lights added. All that bleaching is frying your hair.
I haven't been on camera since colllege. I was chunkey in college but it never showed that much on camera as I always picked slimming clothes.
Here reporting is a bit diffrent your looks play a small roll but the biggest roll is your skills. US market is bit diffrent from Canadian where emphasis is placed on your looks. Don't let it get you down just contiue to work at it seems as if you have come along way already.

Your doing great so keep up the good work!
