Chemical and physical castration does not work due to the strong element of addiction that seems to be a part of pedophilia. A collegue of mine used to treat sex offenders in the prison system, and the inmates would masterbate until they had physically damaged their genitalia, but that did not stop them either.
There was some talk of using aversion based treatment some time ago, but i dont know if that is still considered valid or not.
I have no problem with using what ever means to diminish the risk that pedophiles present to society. The real predatory serial pedophiles need to spend time in the big house where they will get plenty of empathy training by some big lonely black man or woman in prison.
However, the murderers will not tolerate being with the pedophiles, and often times if given the chance they will try to kill the pedophiles. That is why Dahmer had to be separated from the general prison population.
I personally thought that OJ, MJ and J Dahmer would have made great cell mates
