The American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicates that in 1998 over 132,000 American women had their breasts augmented for cosmetic reasons (which is basically the main reason, e.g. over 70-80% of total performed augmentations), but this figure may be underestimated in terms of the annual augmentations due to nonsurgeon physician surgeries (Cosmetic breast augmentation surgery: a critical overview. Breast augmentation is a trend that was apparently started in America, so I'd imagine similar figures follow throughout the world, if not less.
