$5.99 here. I'd think that salmon would be cheaper over there on the mainland :) Salmon is good stuff, but almost $10.00/lb. is still a hard sell :)

hmm i rarely pay retail for fish
i get wild pacific salmon for 3.99
and farm raised atlantic (not my fave) for 2.89
in my area double that and that is what retail pays

lol... I wish! ... thanks for the input, I'd give you K but it seems I have already!
yep
no worries
check my yummy thread for recipes and food hints
wonder why you are paying so much
shop around new england should not be that bloody expensive

thats too much... i get rib eye steaks here for less than that... fuckin beautiful ones...
top i would pay is 5ish...
it can be found for 3-4 though...

Not the best, but I wait for grocery stores to have sales on the frozen ones. Mahi-mahi, tilapia, salmon, and cod usually 10 for $10 4-6oz fillets

thanks all, this is an old poll.

I don't eat fish regularly anymore... can't stand it for the most part; besides sushi occasionally now.

EDIT: WTF  ... this popped up in my subscribes just a few minutes ago... last post August! I hate when that happens

wild Alaskan salmon. Whole fish. 2lbs for $3.

I think I could afford it.
I guess i get it really cheap.

I pick it up at local fish market here in NJ - Pretty good - Not sure if wild but really nice always about $7.99 a pound fresh

Is ~ $9.00 / pound "normal?"

How much does everyone pay for this great fish?
I pay $18/pound for wild Atlantic salmon (i.e., not farm raised, less risk of PCB's, mercury, etc.). This is probably unnecessary if you don't eat salmon that much, but I eat it two-three times per week.

I've always wondered, is the guy really selling me wild salmon, or is he just marking up the price of farm raised salmon and claiming it's wild salmon?

Salmon is Great. It depends on the grade etc... If it's good and you enjoy it, $9.00 bucks a pound sounds reasonable. I love Salmon and the prices do vary. I also Love Chilean Sea Bass. That goes for about $20.00 a pound. When we talk about seafood, I also Love Octopus.

msg is for swat doc, if your wondering if its a hatchery salmon or wild look for the dorsol fin, theres the main big one on back then close to the fin at end there should be a little one maybe a inch long. if its there its wild, hatchery salmon have them removed. :) hope that helps

you can always ask to see the documentation/receipts
if it is wild he will proudly and gladly show you

if not buy it elsewhere
but there is a coloration difference
pac and atl salmons are different species of fish
pac salmon is a deeper orangish-red and much larger if king
sockeye pac salmon is the same size as atl
atl is a pale orange to med orange

also if you do get atl get farmraised canadian
the chilean and european farmed salmon is the ones you have to worry about with pcb's
american farmed is not bad either

Sams club or Costco....... way less then $9\lb
You need to by a whole side fliet but cut it up into 6 or 8 oz portions wrap it up real good and freeze what you not going to use with in 4 day of purchase

Sooo true!

Do not be fooled by the color. I was in grocery not long ago and saw some "salmon" from Chili...It had red food dye in the list of ingreds. Oh yeah, just what the hell I want. So, yes, YOU really have to ask questions and READ where the product is from.

I shop at my local fish market for all my fish purchases. You can't go wrong when you KNOW what you're buying and NO cover-ups can be done to a whole fish providing you know what you're looking at and smelling!

Everybody sing with me:"Fish heads, fish heads"..lol I have the fish monger filet 'em for me. I'd not be able to eat 'em otherwise.

I love to fish and usually catch my own, a average salmon I get 6 big meals usually, but my fav is Walleye, it's probably more than salmon at the store though but tastes better and really healthy and protein packed as well .. I live rite on the water and can usually catch big fish rite off my dock, if my pockets are hurting I just do it the old fashioned way and catch my own, can't complain. Before I statred working out I let them all go, now they are in trouble.

Fish heads are awesome! That's where most of the nutrients are, as well as the organs. I completely agree with buying directly from the fisherman/farmer; you usually skip the misleading bullshit of suspect sellers/supermarkets.

Down here at Wholefoods- Fresh wild caught king salmon is $29 a pound. Which is ridiculously expensive.

True, they can be a rip off. They figure they have the market cornered as the health food store and charge stupid prices and people will pay it since it's the better alternative.

Farmed is cheaper for a reason though; as those fish are fed less than stellar food, usually by products and shitty soy feed which fish were never meant to consume. Still a viable option, just not the best, but certainly we have to work within our means.
