Ridiculous deadlift claim...

So I get to my nearest ghetto gym and I'm immediately dissapointed to see that the only barbell is on the surrounded by the usual suspects. I need to do C&J first, and I've just jogged in and I'm warmed up. The bar's got about 600lbs on it, all in loose plates in a competely random order, something like two 45's then a 25, then a 35, 2 more 25's another 45...

I see this large (240lb) 6'2" guy, with about 6 layers of clothing on, wrapping wrist straps around the bar and setting himself. My max is 550, so I'm keen to see someone beat that. He tenses up and pulls and the bar bends and then he lets go - the plates haven't even left the floor. I wait for him to unwrap and get his breath and I politely ask him if he plans to be much longer, or if anyone is waiting. He's really friendly and says I'm next. Some dumbshit asks if I want the plates left on and I resist the temptation to borrow the wraps and go for a PB. Damn it would have been nice to blow the gym away with that lift after their 'champ' had failed.

As I'm doing my C&J's I get talking to the guy who tells me his name is Atlas. He's really nice, but he tells me that he can deadlift 850. He did it last year when he weighted - 305, and he did 815 last week, but couldn't manage 700 (Iknow the bar was about 600lbs) today because he hadn't carbed up. He claimed he could bench 600, squat 700 and with the smith he could deadlift 1250lbs.

I just told him how great that was, but honestlty! How stupid do I look?

Has ANYONE actually seen in front of their own eyes (not a video) an 800+ DL? I would think that that kind of weight is damn near world class!!!

You should have told him you'd never seen anyone lift that amount and that you'd be privileged to see him do it next time he tries :)

A guy at the gym here the other day was telling me of a Greek Cypriot who "messed up his back not long ago" that had deadlifted 11 plates per side.

Granted it would be 20 kilo bar (which would be bent probably) and 20 kilo plates...so that would only be....

1012 deadlift...

Only...lol.

A lot of Eastern Bloc strongman competitors can pull 800...and I've competed with quite a few. I'm a decent deadlifter and I can't pull 800...yet.

I've seen 750 pulled at a master's meet and that was damn impressive.

I saw another guy do 804 like is was a warm-up at a strongman comp I was at. It was supposed to have been an 18" dead but ended up being about 10" so it wasn't quite a full pull, but this guy was an animal, he was about 6' and 250lb or so.

May as well take it as a compliment since 'Atlas' obviously felt the need to impress you ;)

The biggest lifts I've seen in person:

Bench: 560-something from a PL guy I used to work with. He was about 5-9 300, and back in the day we used to have to wear ties to work. Suffice it to say his tie came down about 2 inches from his collar :)

Squat: 495 x 3 butt to ankles with belt and wraps from a BB'er at my current gym.

Dead: 600 from the same guy.

Since I lift at a Bally's I rarely see anyone dead over 315. And I see some guys squat 3 plates but only quarter squats.

Most ridiculous claim I've heard recently is from a guy who said he just started squatting and able to get 405 x 10 'deep'. Mostly I see this guy doing leg press quarter reps with his hands pushing on his knees

yeah. check over on the PL forum. someone posted a link to a guy named Magnusson (can't think of it off the top of my head.) guy holds the new world record in the Deadlift with a 970 comp lift. there is a link of the guy working out. i think the link shows him doing 900+. i guess, in the comp. that he set the record in, the attempted 1000+, got it locked out, but the judges said it wasn't clean.

970!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAST MEGA BEAST DEADLIFT
HOLY HOLY WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

One time this guy walked into the gym:
Took over 15 min. between warm-up sets, then hoisted 700. I counted the plates 3x to make sure.
Afterwards he did 3 sets of side laterals using a 15 lb. dumbell, then left.
He was a bit over 6', and weighed I guessing 270, though from what I could tell nothing he was carrying looked in the least toned. Still, he made the lift, no problem.
I'd never seen he before, or since. One of my more hallucinatory gym experiences.

Well.......................

When I lifted in a meet the newspaper said I had deadlifted 640lbs. "She hits big weight for the Gold!" It was the funniest friggin thing.

640 at 129lbs. I was famous for a day. :)

Looks like lb. for lb. you have everybody's story beat. :)

I've seen a guy get 800 to his knees, seen the same guy squat 805 with a cheap ass suit and wraps, these were both in the early 90's.

Saw Mike Brown bench 735 at age 19, made it lood friggin easy, it was really sick man.

I have only seen a handfull of guys in a, big name gym, deadlift 500+. As far as I can remember, I have never seen anybody, other than myself, do a true raw 500+ dead in a public gym.

600 is great, its way more than most gym goers could ever dream of. 800.. um. well... I dont think most people have the balls, stubbonness or obsession to ever pull even half that so no, you'll never see that in a public gym.

what amazes me about the deadlift is how little weight the tiny handful of people who perform it in public gyms use... the fear of 'messing up your back' I guess.

Are you serious? I think of myself as tiny, (6' 185) and I hit 405 when I was 5 lbs. lighter last summer. I did use straps though. I want to hit 405 raw soon and hit upper 400's with straps. In my gym, I've only seen maybe 5 or 6 people ever do deadlifts and one guy was doing 500+ raw.

Jim is a smart guy...I never thought of this, I always thought these guys just had issues.

The last time I was at the college gym I use this little mutant came over was telling me how he pulled a bicep doing 600 lbs deads (I was doing deads at the time), then he laments about how the gym doesn't allow chalk and only has DB's up to 100 lbs. Now with all this bullshit, I started sizing him up, thinking maybe he could do what he claimed, but there was no way.

This guy was about 5-5, 180 lbs, 40 years old, fat, and had missing teeth. The only thing he would be able to do with 150 lbs DB's would be to roll them across the floor.

kyle gulledge trained down here for about 6 months, he was doing mostly OL at the time, but once after a full OL workout that included snatches around 300lbs and cleans around 400lbs, he went and did a quick deadlift workout and pulled a 750 deadlift. kyle is i think the only teenager ever to pull over 800, doing 830 at 19 years of age. hes pretty strong. ive seen my share of crazy lifts, big deadlifts, squats, clean and jerks, snatches, etc, but i have kgot to hand it to kyle when it comes to deadlifting. his ability to pull a decent lift even when he hasnt been training it, is already tired from a hard workout, etc, is pretty awesome.

I'm like that size but my deadlift is no where near that
then again I havn't done Rack Pulls or anything but still

Some half-wit at my gym told me that he once squatted 6 plates either side so heavy and that the Bar snapped - I kid you not!!!!

I said "Excuse me for a second" and went away and LMFAO!!!!!!

I missed a single today with 475.

I got four-fiddy easy, and then loaded up with 475 and pulled raw. Came up really easy and then at the last 20% (shrugging back and locking) my weak ass left grip went and it all hit the deck. I'm hoping to have 500 in the bag by Feb (for sure!) and 600 raw mid year my old max being 550 with straps.

I'll be watching plenty of Tweakle vid's...

Wow..I am feeling alot better about my deadlifting ability after reading this thread. Since I joined LA Fitness in Coconut Creek last year I have only seen ONE person, other than myself, do anything over 400 on the DL. Of course I think I have watched maybe 5 people total even DO deadlifts the past year there. Most poeple there just line up for the bench and leave the squat racks to me.

the other day i saw this round up of the 05 united strongman comp. so they were showing the years final event in thailand and they had this arrangement on which they had placed a thai "tuk-tuk" (it's a small 3-wheeler) filled with these little thai girls. if i remember correctly the weight of the whole thing was supposed to be 360 kgs = 793lbs. one end was hinged and the other end had handles which the competitors were supposed to DL to failure. michael starov, the overall 05 winner won this event hands down... he did 25 reps!!!
