So I get to my nearest ghetto gym and I'm immediately dissapointed to see that the only barbell is on the surrounded by the usual suspects. I need to do C&J first, and I've just jogged in and I'm warmed up. The bar's got about 600lbs on it, all in loose plates in a competely random order, something like two 45's then a 25, then a 35, 2 more 25's another 45...
I see this large (240lb) 6'2" guy, with about 6 layers of clothing on, wrapping wrist straps around the bar and setting himself. My max is 550, so I'm keen to see someone beat that. He tenses up and pulls and the bar bends and then he lets go - the plates haven't even left the floor. I wait for him to unwrap and get his breath and I politely ask him if he plans to be much longer, or if anyone is waiting. He's really friendly and says I'm next. Some dumbshit asks if I want the plates left on and I resist the temptation to borrow the wraps and go for a PB. Damn it would have been nice to blow the gym away with that lift after their 'champ' had failed.
As I'm doing my C&J's I get talking to the guy who tells me his name is Atlas. He's really nice, but he tells me that he can deadlift 850. He did it last year when he weighted - 305, and he did 815 last week, but couldn't manage 700 (Iknow the bar was about 600lbs) today because he hadn't carbed up. He claimed he could bench 600, squat 700 and with the smith he could deadlift 1250lbs.
I just told him how great that was, but honestlty! How stupid do I look?
Has ANYONE actually seen in front of their own eyes (not a video) an 800+ DL? I would think that that kind of weight is damn near world class!!!
