Relevance of meal frequency?

MS, I'm sorry your ketogenic diet did not go well. If you wouldn't mind can you please tell us about the experience as I think we could learn something from your efforts. Thank you.

Well my keto experience was not all that unusual for a female. I was pretty strict for 6 days, entering ketosis tuesday night to wednesday morning. The blinding headaches, nausea weakness and dizziness I put up with for 6 weeks (stupid me) and I missed a lot of work thinking this was ultimately for my well being. By 6 weeks I had lost a lot of weight, but too much of that was muscle. Almost certainly this was because I could not eat enough of the foods to maintain LBM. I threw a lot of my meals up again. When I came off the diet I had uncontrollable urges to eat lots of carbs AND fat, and I had previously had no trouble maintaining a low fat lifestyle. Worse than that was the carbs I craved were absolute crap carbs. Needless to say I gained back all the weight I lost and then some. It took me around 6 months for things to stabilize so I could stick to a healthy diet. I am over 40 years old and I have never had any eating disorders before so I found this experience very unpleasant. Bottom line is the diet worked well for fat and muscle loss. I felt very ill most of the time and suffered serious post diet rebound.

I'm trully sorry about that but you seem to have learned from your experience and maybe that is worth the difficulty you encountered.

One follow up question: In the description of your diet above you state you take in about 60g of protein twice a day. Do you find that amount at each time difficult to utilize or does it work for you because you only do it twice a day? I know it's hard to answer that question since you can't peak inside your cells and see what's happpening (althoughthat would be pretty cool).

I know for myself I have difficulty taking in more than 30 grams in one sitting. I notice facial swelling and an uncomfortable "toxic" like feeling. I don't think it's simply gluconeogenesis but rather an allergic type reaction.

Anyway I'm glad you are doing much better with your current plan and good luck with your future training. Thanks.

Damn MS! Your posts are like essays......LOL

Anyways, meal frequency is quite simple.

If you're dieting, smaller more frequent meals is better.

Why? YOUR INSULIN LEVELS ARE LOWER than if you ate
2-3 meals a day.
Less insulin=MORE FAT LOST

If yo're bulking, less meals is actually better.

Why?

Higher insulogenic response, increased protein deposition
and turnover rates.

This of course assumming one is natural.

Godspeed

Thanks, MS.

My concern is since I'm hypothryoid and 48, isn't the potential for a slowing metabolism greater for me than for someone with a normal thryoid and a younger age?

I do get a little weary of eating almost round the clock, and as I'm going on vacation....

But, I don't want to do anything to slow down my metbolism.

Anothet Good Post MS Bodybuilder and I I don't know how I missed it but I feel like an idiot 'cause I just started a post on "Do 3 hour meals increase Metabolism? Doh!!!! I'll try and delete my thread but if I can't I'll simply place this link as a reply in the thread. :)

Says who??? Isn't that what this original thread actually contradicts, the fact that 6 meals a day has no advantage to 3 meals a day in terms of FAT loss?
I mean am I missing somethingf here?

Doesn't this thread state that once again its calories in/calories out as far as FAT loss? Furthermore, how would eating 3 meals a day increase insulin levels? The only way I can think of is that you are getting more calories per meal in a 3 meal reigmen but as long as you aren't loading with refined carbs or simple sugars, this seems like splitting hairs in terms of insulin release?

Again, even if you are correct regarding insulin being lower in 6 meals (btw, insulin should be high in one of those meals, most likely the one right after a workout 'cause thats when you need it the most) than in 3 meals, its still calories in/calories out for fat loss which is what this thread tries to point out.
