recovery drink after morning cardio?

jet

New member
I started a split routine. 45 minutes of cardio at 5am and then i go back in the afternoon and lift. Of course, I do a protien/carb drink after my lifting.
My question is should I also include a recovery drink after the morning cardio?

Well, I think it depends on a couple of things. Are you eating anything before? and, how soon after this morning conditioning session are you eating your next "meal?"

I've always wondered this as well, it seems to make sence to replace your muscle and liver glycogen, especially when your going to be putting them through more stress during your later workout. I think I'm going to try it. I don't think you'd need as many simple sugar carbs post cardio, but I think some would do you good. I was thinking of trying this: upon rising drink a protein drink to try and help prevent catabolism during cardio, then post cardio pound another protein/dextrose drink, then 1 hour later eat breakfast. What do you think?

I do the cardio on an empty stomach about 1/2 hour after I wake up ( 45 minutes of moderate intensity). I then eat breakfast about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes later. It usually consists of 6 egg whites, 1 yolk, a serving of oatmeal or a sweet potato, and 1 tbs of flax/or mega twin oil.

Well, I think Iwan2's idea i pretty good, that is similar to what I do, and it seems to work well for me. If anything Jet, I would add in some straight up protein before cardio, then allow the little break time you have after cardio, and then slam a hearty breakfast like you have been doing. I have heard mostly good things about waiting 30 min's to 1 hour after cardio in the morning to take advantage of your raised metabolism and low Blood glucose levels. What do you think Iwan2?

Iwan2bsolid2 has the right idea. after a long cardio session glycogen needs to be replenished. I would use about 80 grams of simple high GI/GR sugars and only around 10-15 grams of whey, then follow it up with a real meal about 1 hr later.

I think it depends on what you're after... for muscle sure go ahead and pound a high carb-high protein drink but for fat loss wait a while and then do a low-moderate GI carb + protein drink. I'm doing fat loss now and that's what I'm doing and it seems to be working o.k.

One thing I wonder about is... if you pound a protein shake with some Glutamine before cardio upon rising, you're going to burn off those cals first before tapping into fat storage right? Even though you have some extra cals from the protein shake to burn off it still makes sence to do because at least you have some amino's circulating in your body to prevent catabolism. What do you guys think?

It is best to eat before any kind of exercise. But for max fat loss, I suggest taking some glutamine on an EMPTY stomach before doing cardio.

I agree with taking a higher GI carb after cardio as well as after lifting. I would not take as much carbs (dextrose) after cardio as I would lifting. The reason is glycogen levels don't drop as much after cardio as they do after lifting. But they do drop.

I also recommend dividing your dextrose (HI GI Carbs) and protein (whey only) by 15-30 minutes. This allows proper for glycogen replenishment and insulin spiking. Then eat your food meal 1-2 hrs after the whey shake.

good info rgc3, why just glutamine- to stay void of those cals from the protein? And why do you suggest dividing the carb, protein postworkout? I've heard this before and it makes sence to me. But is it because the protein slows the absorption of the simple sugars back into muscle glycogen? Would you take your Glutamine with the protein or the high GI shake? Makes sence to put amino's with amino's but just wondering...

Iwan2:

You're correct that even Whey will slow the absorbtion of dextrose. But I do suggest taking Glutamine with the Dextrose. Gutamine will not slow the absorbtion rate. You can also throw Creatine into the Dextrose/Glutamine shake. This makes a very powerful shake.

Yes, I avoid the pro cals before cardio. Of course, I only do cardio while getting ready for a show. Too lazy in the "off-season";)

But remember that it is only Whey and water that you want to drink after taking the dextrose mix. All other proteins absorb into the body too slow.

Try it.....you'll like the results!

When I'm cutting I do about 40 minutes of cardio in the morning on an empty stomach. I wait for about 1 hour after doing cardio before I eat. The meal is a regular one, not a shake.

Like others have said, you don't want to eat right after cardio cause your metabolism is high, and since your sugar levels are low in the morning, fat will be burned.

I did this all the time around 2 years ago, I was lean, but small too. I listened to the body for life advice of Bill Phillips. Then I was told that you need to eat or replenish right after any type of strenuous exercize to stop catabolism? Now I hear to wait again to eat. Ok, which one is it?

RGC3- I will try that instead of mixing my protein and dextrose together postworkout. How much dextrose you taking in (.4 - .8) gm per lb bodyweight? Then you wait how long to pound your protein 15-30 min? How much protein do you consume? K, lates.

u should always have real food over drinks.

i do cardio 60mins on an empty stomach. wait an hour and have l-glutamine and a 'real' meal.

Cool. I take .4 gram of Dextrose lb of bodyweight. So that's about 56 grams. I suggest trying this formula. Then adjust the amount by what happens or doesn't happen to your body. You're playing with you're insulin so you can get graet gains or fat. Depending on your body's responce to the insulin spike and length of the spike.

I personally wait 30 min after drinking my dextrose shake. My Whey shake is 40 grams of pure Whey in water. Some people will freak thinking that long before taking in protein (that's for you CajunFreak!).

I then eat a meal 1-2 hrs after downing the Whey shake. Keep pumping that body with nutrition and GROW!

NOTE: You'll gain a little weight (fat). This is due to overfeeding the body with nutrition. You can adjust all other meals except for the post recover shakes.....after you find your dextrose intake. To drop those extra lbs if going on a cutting cycle.
