raw egg whites

Everyone says not to eat raw egg whites, but all the guys in the past used to make shakes out of them, and didn't have chronic salmonella poisoning. Anyone still do this, and how often do you get sick?

yeah some people on the board still mix them into there shakes, I guess they don't get sick off them otherwise I would assume they would stop.

Basically they say cook em because its fast to do so, doesn't hurt the egg and reduces the risk, some even say it breaks down the protein chains a bit making it easier to assimulate.

but then again if you do so it won't mix into a shake to well will it :)

If you can afford the extra expense, I would recommend the use of something like EGG BEATERS, which has been pasteurized to eliminate salmonella. That is of course, you still plan on eating your eggs raw.

You can buy pure 100% egg whites in a carton at most grocery stores and they are pasturized these are much better than egg beaters.

If you dont' cook your eggs you won't be getting the full protein content that's potentially available in them.

COOK YOUR EGGS.

on a side note....

I was watching Different Strokes last night, and Mr. Drummon was training Kimberly in the morning, he made the maid go and get her breakfeast , which was 1 whole egg.. she cracked it in a glass and Kimberly drank it.

Then...i went to sleep, i had a dream that i also downed an egg. It was too fucking real.

Peace

You can go to just about any super market and get some pasturized eggs. If they're pasturized you don't have to cook them. Other than that...I'd cook them just to be on the safe side. salmanela (I'm not sure if that's spelled right) is something you don't want to mess with. That will definately set back you plans.

Just a little FYI. Im a restaurant manager and have gone through many food safety classes. Its not a good idea to have raw egg product at all. Many cases of salmonella go undetected because they are slight. Some people may just get diareaha or cramps. They will blame it on something they "ate" and not know the real cause of the problem. Also you get the same protein value from cooked and uncooked eggs. Heat does not destroy the protein in eggs. Just my 2 cents.

I've heard that the best thing to when using raw eggs is to put them in the microwave until right before they start to turn white. The lenght of time may vary with your microwave but the heat will definatly kill off alot of the bacteria.

Not positive if it really works well but it sounds like a good idea.

Most of the amino acids (protein) in an egg are found in the white. The yolk is mostly fat. The amino acid content of a raw or cooked egg is basically the same, no matter how you cook it.

Cooking denatures protein. Denature means changing the structure of protein. A cooked egg tastes better than a raw egg and is more appealing.

The nutritional composition of raw and cooked egg is the same. However, the avidin in raw egg whites destroys biotin also found in raw egg whites. Cooking prevents this from happening.

:) I am under the impression that you dont want Biotin destroyed so you always cook your egg whites.

One of the greatest things ever invented was the egg white omlette ;)

A few years ago, my professor told me that eatting raw egg whites is a waste. Your body has a hard time digesting it, and you don't get the full amount of protien that you would be getting if you had cooked it. Many people dont know that tho... And why risk getting sick too.

This is an old, old arguement boys. I've read a lot of legitimate but conflicting info on it. Right now, I have no idea whether raw or cooked is better. Best we leave it to the philosophers...:D

Sal

Don't worry about Sal Monella. The FBI caught him poisoning eggs in Safeway about a year ago. They sentenced him to life.

Eddie Coli is still on the loose and the last I heard is poisoning burgers up around Portland way.

And Ray Beez is somewhere in Virginia biting dogs and spreading hydrophobia. Keep an eye out on the East Coast. :D
