protein shake + digestion

NapoleanComplex

I drink 2 protein shakes a day. 1 in the morning, and 1 post-workout. About 30min-1hour after the protein shake, I start getting gas. Does this mean that I am not digesting the shake...not getting the protein?

20 minutes later the protein you just consumed is still in your stomach and small intestine.

However excess protein consumption can and will cause gas. It means you're getting more protain than your body can absorb. Better than not having enough!

Yogurt can help. Ginger is supposed to help but it didn't help me.

You can try adding things to your shake or changing your brand altogether. You can add flaxseed oil to slow down the absorption rate of the protein.

Increase your fiber intake, eat plenty of green veggies. If you're a coffee drinker, drink 1 -2 cups of coffee in the morning (coffee is a diarrhetic and will help keep you flushed) and drink plenty of water. Not a cure for gas, but a good way to keep the trains moving and flush out excess "sludge".

I had a bit of a gas problem when I upped my protein intake and (I was already a coffee drinker, so) I increased my fiber intake by means of green veggies and started drinking more water (1+ gallon a day) and I am no longer as gassy as you seem to be.

Give it a try, if it doesn't work, try Beano.

You have a crappy protein!

Easiest way to discuss it is via beans. Beans have a protein in them which humans cannot digest. We can't, but the BACTERIA in your intestines CAN. When the bacteria munch on them they then produce GAS which you spew out the easiest exit port.

The same thing happens with protein powders using cheap/inferior proteins. You get proteins in the gut which you can't digest, but your bacteria can.

MORE fiber might make it worse. The enzyme in beano won't work on the inferior protein in your drink unless of course it's the bean protein they are cutting into your powder.

You need another protein powder.

The same also happens with RAW eggs because there is a protein in the raw egg which the body can't break down, but cooking breaks it and you have no problems. If you have egg powder in the protein, this could be the problem as well.

awesome info animal, i never knew that.
i think this will help a lot as one person was telling me about some protein that doesnt cause stomach trouble
but it was very expensive
it was Interactive Nutrition IsoWhey. (amazing taste in water) (too expensive)
i didnt buy it but i wanted to

Holy shit that's expensive!

Mine is $7/lb, has GMP and is 97% protein (typical) and no enzymes!

Hmm, those enzymes would be in there to digest protein! Why does your body need help digesting it if it's so good!

I guess I should charge that much!

Actually the protein that you can't break down is in the SKIN of the bean. Baked beans give me gas, refried beans don't. Maybe because the skins are all ground up.

Anyways, regardless fo the type of protein you eat if you eat more than your body can absorb you're going to get gas. Sometimes I just eat a shitload of steak and chicken but dont' up my protain shake consumption. Boom massive stinky farts. So don't be so quick to ascribe it to crappy protein.

You are wrong.

Without going into a lecture it's simply enough demonstrated by the fact that people having gas problems can switch to a quality protein powder and take 400g/day and never have a problem.

Your bean skin theory is WRONG as well. The same protein is still in there and heat doesn't alter it. Baked beans are a different bean than refried, too!

People not even taking any protein powder or even the mdr of protein can still have problems with a big steak or chicken meal. It's not because you can't 'absorb it all' which is another of the great myths of nutrition.
