Post Workout Nausea ?

I'm not sure how many of the rest of you experience it, but after extremely intense workouts on my heavy days (primarily on heavy squat days), I experience 30-40 minutes of nausea after my workout is over. I don't actually blow chunks, but I have to lie down in a cool area until it subsides.

Is there any physiological explaination or solution for Post Workout Nausea?

Either, low blood sugar, GH release, dehydration, motion of food in the stomach, blood flow directed away from the digestive system etc etc. I get that between sets, it goes away after 15 min.

I try to work out on an empty stomach (no food for at least 4 hours prior) because I abide by the theory that the digestive process robs you of valuable blood flow to your muscles during your workout. So Food sloshing around isn't the problem.

As far as the rest low blood sugar, GH release, dehydration, etc... Is there any way to preempt nausea without aggravating the first cause (food sloshing around)?

I always eat a lot before I work out for energy. I make sure to wait an hour for it to digest.

I used to get sick like nauseous after workouts but I was really out of shape back then. Nowadays my workouts are well over an hour long and I've got plenty of energy to finish them, and I feel perfectly fine afterwards.

Hope you figure out what's causing it. Good luck.

This use to happen to me too, (it actually might be coming back but...) anyway, a long time ago, EVERYTIME I WAS AT THE GYM I WOULD HAVE TO LIE DOWN DURING THE WORKOUT. It sucked. I was so nauseous that if I went one more set or rep of anything I would either pass out or vomit, so I layed down. This happened for about a year. Then, and you can laugh, but I started taking creatine along with protein powder for the first time ever and it went away.

I don`t know if it was the creatine or the protein , but it WORKED I was a happy dude. I was going through my workouts with no problems. I actually TRIED to get nauseous by upping the intensity and doing things that would normally gert me dizzy and stuff but NOTHING.

Sure some of you may be shaking your heads like "creatine"??? but it worked . Maybe I was already deficient in something and the stuff gave me what I needed ,I DON`T KNOW. Anyway that`s my story fwiw

I almost always get that after training legs. Its alot worse for me on high rep days. Just sit down at the gym and relax for a few minutes. Drink your pw workout drink and chat with the girls for 30 minutes or so, and you'll feel good as new. I like to take a 30 minute nap immedatiately after I get home from training so, if I still feel naseated it is gone after that.

i know exactly what the problem is........... (at least i think so.)

your not breathing right. it took me and my partner 2 years to figure out why??....... on all of my leg exerices, becuase they are so heavy, i find myself hold my breath too long on the positive motion, which cause you to get very light headed.

thats what worked for me. breathing.......lol

Goneliftin, there may be something to the creatine on this one. I don't have the details (that's bad because I'm a nutritional science major), but I saw a report on cnn awhile back on creatine and the brain. A study have come out showing that after taking a serious blow to the head, creatine uses were only 1/3rd as likely to develop a concussion as regular people. So it seems to offer some type of protection to the brain from certain kinds of stress. Anyone have the science behind this, and a possible link to goneliftin's experience with creatine?

I'm having recurring vertigo issues, which makes me dizzy and naseous for hours - now it's extending to days. It mainly happens during a strenous bench workout, row workout, or ab workout; anything that has my head in a horizontal position. I've had all tests done imagineable and still no idea. Finally, my doctor gave me medication to help with the dizziness and naseousness.

In other words, there can be many causes; if it happens frequently enough, you may want to see a doctor about it. I waited a few months before I caved and went in.

JJFigure, sorry to hear that. I never like hearing about someone who trains extremely seriously having a medical problem that inhibits their training.

I always get this way after squats or deadlifts. I hate it because I can't drink my post workout MRP for almost 45min-1hr after the workout. I have puked twice on squat day but that was in college after about a week of binge drinking.

LOL! I'm sure the binge drinking played a role in that one.

overexertion man...its your body's way of telling you its HAD ENOUGH!!!
kind of like when you drink too much then puke it up....that means STOP!
ha:p

This is a major annoyance that sometimes plagues me also so i have a special interest in understanding it. Endorphins are released into the blood spine and brain during extreme exertion because you are putting your body under stress, similar to the related and also natural fight or flight response. These Endorphins interact mainly with opoid receptors in the brain similar to opiates. For those of us, and man am I one, who are sensitive to opiates, such as oxycontin for example, we feel a similar response, nausea.

It's unclear why the body produces chemicals that cause that response but the same release that causes a high, can cause nausea. I often find myself in between vomits feeling absolutely invincible.... A very strange predicament, especially since it mostly happens while I have ducked away in the stall at the gym trying to keep the vomit noise down. I have learned for me, the warning signs and try to pull up before over doing it... It just takes too long to recover once the "launch sequence" has been started.

Also, I noticed that it typically only shows up if I work both lower and upper body. If I go from big chest blast to a squat smack down then onto pull ups followed by the leaper, I know my next set will involve me wrapped around the porcelain.
