Hi Everyone,

I am actually almost due any day now, and im very worried about how my tummy will look after i give birth, i know its going to look like a deflated balloon with stretch marks :(. I have been going to the gym throughout my whole pregnancy and im all baby, ive kept most of the rest of my body fit except for obiously the tummy. Any advice out there on what to do about getting my stomach back?, also are there any steroids or anything i could take to accelerate this process?, ive actually never taken any steroid, because of the side effects and i dont know much about them either, but i am curious as to what could be out there to help?, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Congrats on the baby! I hope all goes well for you. My first thought is that you will probably be surprised at how well your body recoups and goes back to the way it was (or almost back). Not to say you won't have a few stretch marks but if you've kept yourself in good shape and haven't gained a lot of extra weight, your skin should go back to almost normal. It may take some extra diet/ exercise but what I found was that it just took a lot of patience. Depending on whether you breast/ bottle feed too...I'd give your body at least 6 weeks and evaluate then. It really does take time for things to go back to the "normal" pre baby.

All the best! :)

Okay, deep breath. Just get rid of the whole steroid thought, don't go there.

I'm assuming by your user name that you're 24 or so and this is your first baby? You're going to be surprised at what's going to happen to your body after the baby is born, but it's not going to happen overnight. Remember, it took your body nearly a year to get into the shape it's in now, it might take about the same amount of time to return to your prepregnancy shape (it rarely does if you've gained minimal extra weight and stayed active, but it still takes time). Also, remember, just because you had the baby doesn't mean you won't still have hormones circulating in your system for a while that will cause your metabolism to be a little different. These Hollywood stars that are nearly prepregnancy shape six weeks after having a baby are wearing a WHOLE lot of supportive under garments and have an entire battillion of personal trainers, chefs and stylists helping them look the way they do.

Your highest priority should be your health and the baby's health and at this time of your life, particularly if you intend to breast feed, the last thing you need to do is put steroids in your system. Steroids don't make you lose weight, anyway, they help build muscle. They are serious drugs, with serious side effects and can do very strange things to women and not to be taken by the uninformed or casual user and certainly have no business being taken by someone who just had a baby.

Stretch marks are scars, the visible damage from the deeper layers of skin tearing. They will fade in time but they'll never go away, except with plastic surgery. Your stomach won't look as horrible as you think. Youthful skin bounces back, it just needs time. I'm sorry, hon, but this is the price you pay for children, and this is the price you pay if you want to be a mother. You've grown a human being inside of you, that's going to do things to your body but how much is permanent change is something you won't know until about four to six months (or more) after the baby is born. Worrying before then won't do you one bit of good, it'll just stress you out, and the baby will pick up on it, and be stressed, too.

Focus on being healthy and enjoying your life and new child, the rest will come in time. If you have a healthy diet and are in good shape already, you'll probably bounce back in no time.

Your stomach will be fine! I just gave birth 8 months ago, my stomach went back to normal pretty quickly and I gained a TON of weight. You would be surprised how much is just water. I remember being soooo worried about it. In fact, I couldnt even use my abs to get out of bed but it seems my stomach bounced back pretty well without much effort, really all it took was time. Time is all you need, just be patient. It takes time for everything to settle back to what it once was. Trust me, those first couple weeks the last thing you are going to be worried about is going out w/ cute outfits anyway. lol

I bought a postpartum belt, called the bandit belly band. I wore it the day after I gave birth and helped hold everythign in, and I wore it 24/7 for a month even when I slept, even when I went out, around the house, I wore it all the time. It just helped me retrain my abs on how to just hold themself in, instead of flop around everywhere. I made sure I had it before I gave birth, I packed it in my hospital bag! hahahah! the first day I could barely get it around my stomach, but by the end of two weeks it was too big and I needed another but you can really feel yourself being held in. I think a pair of spanx would work too, but the belly bandit makes you hold your abs in, it forces you to more than spanx.
