Portion Measurements for Veggies and Meats

When you try to measure, say, 2/3 cup of cooked (from frozen) veggies, how do you do this? When you use the measuring cup, do you mush down the veggies so that their isn't excess space?

Also, how do I measure the ounces in meats? Would a food scale be absolutely precise? Is this how you measure them? Does anybody simply round it out based on the servings per package?
 
Food scales are great but not absolutely necessary. For veggies I usually don't try and make it too complex since there are not many calories in them anyways. I usually cook the whole bag and divide it by "eye" I guess. If you're going to measure them they don't really have to be "mashed" down.

And for meat I usually buy the chicken already in strips. 1 1/2 pound is usually 5 pieces or 3oz. each. Ground beef I just go by the package. If you want to be really precise with your calories you can get a scale, but I just like to keep in simple since I'm usually in a rush. Hope that helps some. :)
 
Hi...I have worked in the weight loss industry and protein is measured before cooking.

4 oz. red meat = 1 serving
4 oz. poultry dark meat = 1 serving
5 oz. white meat = 1 serving
5 oz. fresh fish = 1 serving

If anyone needs any info on food portions just let me know and I will pass along the info...
 
I would get a scale! Food shrinks once is cooked, so I would weight them after is cooked. That means they shrink in protein and carbs as well. Fats will also shrink, if you don't add fat to it.

I have a Salter model 1400 and not only does it weigh my food, it calculates the calories, protein, carbohydrate, total sugars, total fat, fiber, sodium, cholesterol, net carbohydrates and the G.I value of my food :D

That sounds awesome that model.

For me, a scale + cron-o-meter suffices.

Having said that, I know the calorie content for almost any food now, and over time after using the scale, you get quite accurate at measuring the weights of food.

I would always recommend weighing things like nuts though - even if u think ur eye is good. I still weigh anything but fiberous veggies.

nice!!!!! im going to look into one of those to add to my collection of used for a month gadgets lol.

It's a $90 scale. I got it on ebay for $12 shipped. It does come in handy when dieting and counting macros.

Oh, good to hear/read you weight your food. I use the Salter as well and we're very close..Lol!
I'm obsessive compulsive and sometimes I use Calorie king, but that's because somethings come out with different numbers
