Along the same lines as what Big Brother Val and KingJohn said, I enter the gym with the 'intention' of having a great workout. I leave everything else outside and focus on my breathing and my awareness of my muscles. I have been doing numerous breathing techniques for meditative purposes for years now and I have been able to apply most of those associated principles to working out. All of my movements are concentrated and deliberate and typically fall under the parameters of the super-slow methods. I think visualization is the key. Being able to see, in your mind, the muscles working and the effects on the full range of fibers, is in my opinion, paramount.
And less reality-based...if I feel as though I need a little extra edge, I imagine my muscles being enhanced with hydraulics. Sounds a little crazy, but it works for me.
Sorry if I rambled...
