Please inform me as to what kind of Protein shake I should buy?

I am in Canada, so that might matter. I also am fairly poor, so please take that into consideration. Can I buy protein shake mix at a Walmart or a grocery store, or do I have to go to a health store? Finally, what should I look for when I buy one? What brand name, ect.. Thanks.

Where in Canada are you?

Get a gold card from GNC and you can get some pretty cheap protein...most everything else at Canadian GNC stores sucks but the protein powders are pretty standard.

Nutrition House is another Canadian health food store with pretty good prices and selection....

Some supermarkets sell powders but I've always found the selection to be very limited - and the price not always competitive.

Stick with any health food store really - just shop around...I'd say a good Canadian price for 2lb tubs of protein would be around 25-35 bucks (again, in Canadian dollars).

You can buy at Walmart but you might have trouble finding a quality whey powder there....depends on the location I guess but the Walmarts I've looked at usually only sell soy powders...which might not be a bad thing depending on your goals ofcourse...

Yep.

Whey is the way to go (pardon the pun)....

As far as I'm aware it's a matter of bioavailability - which is to say, whey protein is absorbed and utilized by the body better than soy protein. It seems to me that soy is considered an inferior protein as far as bioavalability is concerned.

Whey is also absorbed pretty quickly - so you might want to get one powder that's plain old whey - and another powder that has some casein (or some kind of protein blend) for times when you want a slower digesting protein.

If your poor then stick with the basics. Cottage cheese, eggs, chicken, and lean red meat.
Whey is a fast acting protein, digests in about 2hours. So if you use whey by it's self its best as post work with simple carbs, or along with food. Make sure the rest of your diet is in check, adding protein to a bad diet wont do anything except waste money. Remember supplements are just that supplemental. They are to help, not to patch mistakes.

asone....

WITH MY GNC GOLD CARD I CAN GET 12 LBS OF OPTIMUM NUTRITION WHEY PROTEIN 20G PER SERVING I USUALLY TAKE 2 SCOOPS AND IT LASTS ME ABOUT 2 MONTHS

Casein right before bed helps stave off catabolism during sleep. So whey might be a good choice for the on-the-go hours with lots of snacking, but slow-digesting casein is best for late night, when you won't eat again 'til morning.
