Papa Johns' Diet

So one of my gym bros.. ya know, a guy that you never hang out with.. but see and talk to at the gym all the time, were talking about dieting and such. He is one of those powerlifter types that would rather go for strength and size than aesthetics. He is huge, and not fat by any means. I have seen him bench 400+ pounds for reps, and squat 500+ for reps. So yeah.. he is pretty strong.

Anyways.. he said that he has been eating his "Papa John's" diet since he was in college. So I would assume it has been for a few years now. Basically his diet goes like this. For breakfast he has a protein shake with whey and oatmeal then another protein shake post workout. For the rest of the day he will order an X-Large "The Meats" pizza, with double meat and extra cheese from Papa Johns. He eats this through out the day a few pieces at a time with a glass of milk. Sometimes he will switch pizza types but always gets double meat and extra cheese. And he said it cost around $20 a day to do this.

Doesn't sound too bad if you want to get huge. I think if I tried this I would get fat real quick.. or either be in the hospital for heart burn.

powerlifters don't care about their figure. my best bud at my old gym was in his 50's and was strong like the guy you are describing. the strongest dude in the gym but he was only 5 9ish and 240 pounds. a good guy. he ate fried food, lots of meat, i doubt he ate any veggies. he smoked a cigar a couple times a day. he had a big gut. we would have a blast at the gym.. totally different goals but it was great hanging out. the key was he took lifting seriously and i respected that about him. so really i don't care how you look as long as you respect the iron you are cool in my book.

the guy you are describing is carb/cal loading bigtime. if i followed that diet i would get fat also but more importantly i would feel blah. i cannot eat junk food like that or i get sick. the only pizza i mess with is the authentic italian version made with whole grain crust. i would never touch shitty papa johns which to me isn't even real pizza, just grease, white bread, and cheap sauce/bread

I don't know exactly how big this guy is. He is a little taller than me, and thick. Not much a stomach on him. He reminds me of a defensive end or tackle in football. I'd say he is 6-4 and around 280 pounds if I had to guess. The guy definitely respects the iron. Every time I see him, it is like he is training for a competition. Absolute kills every workout. I remember I did a leg workout with him one time and I was basically paralyzed from the waist down for a week. Almost got a wheelchair and a handicap sticker for my car.

I couldn't eat like that. I am really sensitive to simple carbs. If I even look at a slice of pizza I start to feel bloated. I don't eat perfect all the time, but try to keep things as clean as possible. Eating a pizza a day.. loaded with fatty meats, cheese, and simple carbs.. I would get fat no doubt about it. It seems convenient, if I were to try that then I would go with a whole grain thin crust, topped with light cheese and sauce.. then extra chicken, bacon, peppers, and onions.

Yeah i fucking hate heart burn.. ate 2 pieces of pizza yesterday and had heartburn and it kept me up till 3 am

What does he mean "diet"? Does he mean this is what he eats when he wants to lose bf?

Or does he mean this is generaly what he eats during the day and maintain his body? Not sure why you're surprised. I'm sure you know 21 y/o's skinny as a rail who eat mcd's and pizzas all day to and never gain a pound.

His body's setpoint is set at a certain level and he probably eats pretty much what he burns off - hence no weight gain. Though eating oily greasy pizza is probably not a good thing in the long run but the high protein is good.

The one thing that bothers me more than anything is those that take things to extremes. On one side you have the "clean" guys that preach clean eating 100% of the time, and any "bad foods" you eat are going to turn you into a fat ass. Then on the other side you have the IIFYM group (if it fits your macros) that says eat whatever the fuck you want as long as it fits into your macros at the end of the day. Really both of them are right and wrong at the same time. As long as you practice moderation, there is no such thing as a bad food. You just have to know how and when you can eat them. While the IIFYM group does have a lot of validity, I would challenge anyone to go eat whatever you want (pizza, burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, whatever) and make a sensible macronutrient outcome at the end of the day. It just won't work. You will have carbs and fat through the roof with protein moderate. That is a very ubalanced macro profile. If you want to make it work, you will eat "clean" foods by default most of the time.

I eat 100% "clean" meals all week except for three days a week (workout days) when my last meal of the day I allow leniency and have burgers, pizza, fries, bratwurst, or whatever. My macros come out right where I want them at the end of the day, and it allows me to keep my sanity, eat dinner with my family, and achieve my goals at the same time. I maintain around 6% most of the year while getting bigger, heavier, and stronger....so I would say I'm doing alright with it :)

agreed.. just compare 2000 clean calories to 2000 dirty calories, and the amount of food you can eat.

I am going to go on a dirty bulking diet here in a few weeks tho. Don't think I am gonna be eating a whole pizza a day.. but will definitely be indulging.

My buddy is one of those types he will go on test and tren and eat a pizza a day or a few Quiznos subs. He always gets bigger Stronger than I while doing this and no cardio. At the age of 23 he had a mild heart attack. Now he has pre existing conditions, but I can guarantee abusing aas and eating them high sodium greasy ass meals every day contributed. Doctor called him a moron I remember very clearly .
