Okay....I'm scared.

Night Fly

I found a lump in my breast about a week ago. I tried not to think about it (stupid, I know), but finally decided to call my OBGYN and make an appt. to go get it checked. It's not a deep lump...but a superficial one...about two inches below my left nipple. It's a little larger than pea size and it is hard. I can move it around under the skin.

It's a bit scary because I am only 22...and I keep telling myself that maybe it's just a cyst or something...but I can't help but think of the worse possible diagnosis in this situation.

I guess if it is cancer...then I will just deal with it. What other choice would I have? I know that other people have it so much worse than I do...so I really can't complain....but it sure doesn't keep me from being scared.

Just asking a simple request...keep me in your thoughts as I try to deal with this. Thanks.

Wow...this is definately not my area of schooling...guess it is in part of being a male. However, I do want to wish the best for you! Don't start thinking up things making them worse than they are. You did the right step in contacting your doctor. Now, let him do the work and testing. In other words, don't go making yourself sick...guess it's a little easier said than done...sorry. However, i'll give ya a big ol' prayer tonight. Keep your head up KID! hahaha...i'm old.

Spatts...

I have been consuming more caffeine here recently. Maybe that is it. It has actually gotten smaller over the past week. It never got bigger or smaller...no. I hope that mine is the same case as yours. :) Thanks for your input!

You KNOW that you are always in my prayers. If you need someone to go to the doc with you...you know who to call...

My prayers and thoughts are with you. Thanks goodness you're taking care of it immediately. Early detection is vital.

Nightfly!!!!

First of all: Oh, to be 22 again! :o

I also have a "tough" spot in my left breast. I hope that's just what it is. My friend and her mother have gotten cysts in their breasts - they are BIG caffeine (soda) junkies.

I know what you are going through, though. I'm 29 and a couple of years ago, I found a lump in my armpit. It was about the size of a chocolate football or big peanut M & M. Two of my relatives died of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph system), so I was going nuts. I went to the doc and she felt it, too. We "watched" it for a few months and the lump shrank. I was scared, though! Took an AIDS test, thought about what I would do if I got sick, the whole bit. Just try to stay calm until you see the doc.

Good luck!

I'll be thinking of you. I used to get cysts when I drank sugarless sodas. Whatever it is, it's good you're getting it checked out promptly. Take care.

NF, i had a lump to, had it checked out and it turned out caffiene was the culprit.......also, some women just have fibrocystic breasts as well. you are very young to be going thru this, but its not uncommon.....is there a history in your family of breast cancer?

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers...let us know how it goes.

At your age, there is always a corrective treatment that can be followed successfully. Get relaxed and wait for the diagnosis, to see what is the best to follow.

Getting yourself checked out quickly works in your favor big time. That's the smartest thing you could do!

Warmest wishes for only the best. Try not to worry too much...at your age it shouldn't be anything bad. :)

Huggggs to ya.

Thank you ladies (and men!) SO much for the replies. I realize that at this point I am probably overreacting, but being a nursing student, and knowing all the possibilities of bad diagnoses out there...it just makes me worry a bit more than I should. I am hoping that it is caffeine related like everyone said. It has gone down a bit since I first noticed it...and I have been trying to drink more water. I will be sure to let you all know what the deal is after I go to the doctor. :)

Night fly, take care of yourself and I am glad that you're going to the doctor. It probably is nothing, but it is always better to be safe.

You are in my prayers again tonight girl. We both have very important doctors appointments coming up.

Being a nursing student, you know more than I do, but I had lumps before and with no history of problems in my family, had them checked checked out to be fine [some lumpiness in the boobs is normal I guess]. If there is pain, though, then there could be problems. Good for you for noticing and good luck!

Night Fly, know that you have a board full of people praying for you right now.

You've got the right attitude about things, keep your chin up, and whatever the outcome is, face it straight on and YOU WILL WIN...

Hi..I also have had a lump in my breast before..I am 25 yrs old..I've had a few, but I don't have a history in my family of breast cancer. I went to my doctor and she said it was fattie tissue from my menstrual cycle. It went away a couple of weeks after my cycle. But I hope everything works out for you...Good Luck...:)

actually, I missed my appt. last week because of alarm problems. I am scheduled to go in tomorrow afternoon at 3:00. I think it has gone down a bit, but I could be wrong. I still think I need to go get it checked out. That, and also the fact that I haven't had my period in 3 months (no, I'm not pregnant..lol). Thanks for asking Spatts.

You will be in my prayers girl...you know that you always are and always will be. Wish I could be there with you tomorrow...you know that I will worry about you 10x more than you do yourself...

Okay...I went to the doc today and got good news. The lump that I found was only a cyst and she said it would go away in no time! :)

I asked her about my period and, of course, they did a pregnancy test on me...which was negative! So...because I haven't had my period for that long, she gave me a progestin pill to take for 5 days so that it would make me have my period. She said it would probably be the worst one I've ever had. Ugh...I can't wait for that! LOL.

Anyway, I told her that I didn't mind having my period, but she said that because I didn't have it...it really increased my chances of getting ovarian cancer...so...I said gimme the pills! lol.

Thanks for all your encouragement, ladies...I was a bit worried today...but now feel MUCH better!

Congrats! :)

I'm glad to hear that you're ok! Not knowing can really drive ya nuts.

When I was younger (from the time I was about 16 until I was 24, I never had regular periods. I'd go anywhere from 3 to 6 months at times without getting it, then get it for a few months, very painful periods...usually having about 35 days inbetween cycles. My hormones were wacked or something...it was like an early menopause for me with bad hotflashes/sweats and mood swings. I was put on bc pills a few times to help regulate me but ever time we tried, it just made things worse. I was also given those hormone pills to make me get my period a couple of times...that sucked...I feel for ya!

Then when I turned 25 I got it for 6 months in a row...then one month I missed it...I was pregnant! What a shock it was to me, but a very welcome surprise. After I had my daughter I nursed her and got my period back after 3 months. Since then I've been regular. My cycles started back at about 35 days inbetween and stayed that way for years, but in the last 2 yrs. they've gotten closer and now I'm at about 26 days. Weird! I'm 36 now.

When I wasn't regular and when my cycles were farther apart, I had some breast lumps that would come and go and I'd get a lot of pain and tenderness in my breasts, especially the week before I'd get my period. The doctor was never very concerned but had me do a mamogram just to be sure. I just had one done about 2 months ago and I passed with flying colors. The lumps and pain have almost gone away in the last year. :)

Good luck!

thank you again, ladies. That is definitely something that a woman shouldn't have to go through alone.

Spatts...yes...I'm sure I'm going to be a major you know what next week! I dread it as much as the people that will hear my wrath, let me tell you. I hate feeling like that...but oh well. I'm on day two...I'll keep you all updated as to how it affects me...lol.

lovemymuscle...no...no little tire flipper on the way, thank goodness. I am WAY too young to have children...and not sure that I even want any during my lifetime. :)

Wow, that's great news. Maybe the relief will balance out the bitchiness of the uberperiod!

Congrats.
