OK, ok, ok...new to this and I have been reading posts but....

A Question.....

Which would you trust???

Ok, I said that I was weighing myself at GNC on their electronic scale because of the fact that it prints out a little slip of paper saying how much you weigh because I am keeping a journal and I am taping it in the book.

Today I was at the mall and thought, what they hey...check your weight, but I didn't have my wallet. So, I went down to another health food store that has one of the doctor scales. I set the scale to zero to see if it balanced out. It did. And then I weighed myself. I almost fell over. So, then I made it a mission to get two quarters....went to the car, searched all over found two quarters and went back to GNC.

Now for the past two weeks I have noticed that the scale hasn't been balanced (kinda wobbly when I got on it) but since it said I was losing I didn't pay too much attention. So, I stepped on the scale and it read something different than what the other scale said.

I won't tell you what they said until I get replies from you guys....

Phemom...
Thanks for the other day when you posted the reply on you "Told My Fiance" about keeping to it and proving them worng. I spent the whole night while I was at work talking myself out of my walk and then I came home and read that....need less to say...I went for my walk. :D

okay, doctors scales are usually the most accurate, because of the way they are designed (i HOPE this is something you wanted to hear!!! if not, then hey... whatever motivates you more is the more accurate number in fact... screw the scales.. if you SEE improvements then then there are improvements... muscle weighs more than fat, and if/when you're lifting weights the muscle will come...)

glad i can motivate... keep reading that post, i'll bump it up if it falls of the edge of the page... (or print it out and stick it in that journal of yours :) great idea too, boy will you look back on that and value every moment of the hard work and dedication... if that doesn't keep you going, nothing will...)

Well, well, well......

Well...looks like I won't have that little slip of paper anymore to put in my journal.

The scale at GNC said that I weighed 343 lbs...and the doctor scales said that I weigh 327lbs. (you can understand why I almost fell over...I was lighter...haha).

I have lost 33 lbs. And only have 28 more to go until goal number one of 299 lbs. is met.

You are doing it right MR, keep up the good work!

After 'taking off' from the gym for over 20 years, (yes, I'm an old geezer) my wife and I have been making up for lost time the past two years. I have lost about one hundred pounds of fat, and my wife has lost about fifty.

Don't let Mr. Negative get you down, there is some good advise above, and as an aside, he may be a little concerned that you might dump him when you reach your goals. If that is the case, remember that it is his fear of losing you, fueled by his love for you that is causing him to be such a jerk of a man. Give him time, ASK for his support in SPECIFIC ways, and he will probably come around. Just remember, we men are terrible when it comes to understanding your feelings and understanding vague instructions like, "You could really help me by being more supportive!" We need very SPECIFIC instructions like, "To help me succeed, I need you to get me to walk with you every evening for an hour...TOGETHER...rain or shine. Will you help me with that one thing until I reach my goal?" Asking us men for help has to be done like a newspaper article, you gotta give us the who, what, when, where, how, and why. It helps if you let us know for how long too, and that it would mean a GREAT DEAL to you, a VERY GREAT DEAL, HINT-HINT. Oh yeah, a baseball bat helps sometimes too! ;)

Anyway, be sure to share your failures as well as your succsses with the fine people here. We have ALL been in your shoes in some manner, at one time or another. If you face the setbacks and bad things with others help, they are MUCH easier to overcome. There are some REALLY GREAT people here, and they will work to help you as long as you HONESTLY want to help yourself, even if you come on and admit to cheating with a whole banana split.

As far as the scales go, I was near 400 when I started back in the gym and found that even the balance beam Dr.s office scales were not accurate at that weight. I found them somewhat useful for measuring losses though. Remember that scales are not a good measure of success after the first three months or so. Pictures and measurements are better in my opinion because body composition will start undergoing DRAMATIC changes. Those changes are better tracked with pictures and a tape measure because you can measure .25 inches here and there, .5 inches there, and when you add it all up it will be SIGNIFIGANT. But the scale may only show .5 lbs change and it's easy to get frustrated and discouraged.

Oh well, I've yammered on too long. Good luck and stay as far away from the negatives as you can!

two words WHOOO HOOO!!!!

(i've been disconnected all night, but this was the first thread i checked once i got back on! :) )

very happy for you... go girl

GGRRRrrrr

Well, I went back to the doctor scales with my boyfriend today. I made him get on first so he could see if he weighed out right. Because he was the one who told me that the doctor scale was wrong. Then I got on...evidently it was wrong the first time and he was right.

Damn that broke my heart...especially when he looked at me with that "I told you so" look. Right there in the mall I couldn't help but tear up. :( He told me that I got my hopes up and that it was alright since I did lose one pound. I may have lost one pound in real life but I feel like I gained back nine. He went in one store and I walked around to the side of the store away from people and let the tears loose. :bawling: He came out of the store and looked around for me...and came over and wiped my tears away. Telling me that it was alright and that I was doing good. I moped around the rest of the night.....

He left for the gym...and as soon as he did I got up and went to the refridgerator. I am an emotional eater...there was a banana cream pie that has been sitting in there for two days without me touching it...TWO DAYS!! It's hell living with 3 people that don't have worry about their weight or lose weight. I poured me a glass of milk and sat down at the bar with it. I took a bite...and surprisingly...I found no satisfaction in it. I closed the box back up and put it back in the fridge. One small victory in the war....

Still depressed but not as depressed as I could be after eating the rest of the half of pie.

Tomorrow...will definately be a better day

Damn, girl, throw that pie away! It's no good to man nor beast. It's great to have willpower, but why torment yourself like that? Leaving that kinda food around me when I'm on a hard diet is like leaving out vials of crack in front of a basehead (or whatever). Throw it out! Don't buy more!

On the other hand, congrats on not scarfing it down. I've been there. I know what a big accopmlishment that is. Keep it up!

Wyst

Red--Don't weight yourself any more. Ignore the numbers. Go for inches. Pick one pair or pants and use them as a reference point. Repeat--back away from the scale!!!

Congrats! One bite of pie is a feat--trust me, I'll bet every woman who posts here has been in your shoes. Emotional eating is a hard pattern to break, but you can do it.

Not to pry, but why is this clown your boy friend? He might be a boy, but honey, he ain't no friend.

Sometimes I ask myself that question...

But the good times do out weigh the bad. It's just the part of my life that he seems not to support or show interest. His mom says that he doesn't want to get his hopes up again...he thinks that I am going to go strong for a few months and then "peter out" and lapse back to old habits. But I am not...not this time. No way, no how.

He treats me good except for this. He's even said that he doesn't want to get his hopes up...because that was the one thing that he wanted...was a girlfriend who went to the gym and worked out with him. He will get her one day...but I had to decide for myself to do this. I couldn't do it for him...I had to decide to lose weight for myself, because it's what I wanted.
