Obesity and Genetics

Quadzie said:
Also, if you've ever been overweight, say even 10 lbs you know how uncomfortable that is to carry around that spare weight, can you imagine carrying around yourself and four other people all day long ?? That's what it must be like for someone who is that overweight!!

There are eating disorders that people have that can attribute to their overweight status. The best part of the show is that she accepted the fact that she was going to be overweight the rest of her life. If she can accept it, why can't we?

hey quadzie!! im glad u made it over here!! welcome to elite!

.i think many many people on this board have been faced with some sort of obstacle regarding their weight. ...whether it be overweight, underweight, or having an eating disorder. if anyone knows whats it like to struggle with ur body its the people on this board. they know what a bitch it can be to get off ur ass and get moving.... to not only get in shape but to reach a point that surpasses the 'norm.' i think this is why its hard for many BB's to feel sorry for obese people or to find the statement "ive always been fat and always will be fat" acceptable. the girl was obviously not happy with weight and was anything but comfortable and accepting of it. she got gastric bypass surgery!!!

its unfortunate that so many people suffer from obesity....and i dont deny the fact that it must be a miserable thing to deal with but the bottom line is that if u put any obese person on a sensible LONG term 'diet' and exercise program they would not be obese anymore! plain and simple -- the time and effort is not being taken to accomplish their goals.

i think sassy made an excellent point when she said she sometimes struggles with that 10-15 lb extra weight and wouldnt know if she had the "self confidence" to do anything about it had those 10-15lbs turned into 100lbs. its seems like a cycle ....as is any other addiction.... gotta stop that shit...dead in its tracks!

Debu, I watched the entire show also. Did you not see her eating at the table with her friends? There were veggies and other healthy food at the table. I did not see her pigging out on pizza and burgers and fries or anything. Also, did you see her playing softball with her friends? "

Yes, I did see that part, although it was only one part. I don't know if she eats that way as a daily habit though. Even if she did with the gastric bypass I don't think she can eat enough food to keep her body from "starving" , she is still obese. It's great that she is out there expending calories by playing softball but I don't think that is enough. If fat burning and muscle stimulating is what she needs then she needs to eat and work out that way to specificly target that.

I have been there with the overweight bit, I started to overeat for psychological comfort, gained some weight, took control (went overboard with eating disorders) but I've found my balance for the most part.

"The best part of the show is that she accepted the fact that she was going to be overweight the rest of her life. If she can accept it, why can't we?

That's the WORST part of the show! She doesn't have to accept it. It's an EXCUSE. That is exactly my point of this post! Granted she may never be a Cindy Crawford or Cory Everson, but just imagine if she truely educated herself on proper nutrition and exercise what she could do. She went to a surgeon who of course is going to recommend surgery, what is she found a good trainer and followed their advice? Imagine if Wilson6 had her for a year? There is something she can do about it.

whether she gets fat off of burgers and fries or chicken and veggies, the worst part about the show is that it teaches many overweight viewers that they have an excuse to be fat, rather than get their arses to the gym or monitoring what they eat :(

I didn't see that show, and perhaps that girl is one of the few who has a genetic disorder, who knows. BUT I think 99% of overweight people are that way because of too much food and too little exercise. Interesting how such a large percentage also happen to be Americans, who are probably the most genetically diverse of any nation, but who get the least exercise and eat the most highly processed foods of any culture in the world.

I remember as a kid having a friend over (who was overweight like her whole family). She asked "Why does your family eat like you're on a diet?" (meaning small portions, no seconds, no Wonder Bread, Cokes, etc.) Diet? Hmm, this was just normal eating to me. Just about everyone in my family is lean and does some type of exercise. Genetics?...

When I went away to college and ate a bunch of junk, I got fat. (what happened to my thin genetics?!) When I learned to eat properly and exercise, I lost weight. Took a lot of false starts though. (Ah, the thin genetics returned, finally, despite my advancing years :)!) Losing weight, eating less, and learning to exercise was just as painful to me as any other able-bodied human. I just kept trying until it finally became a lifestyle, much like brushing my teeth. I learned to say "No" more often to junk food and overeating and "Yes" more often to exercise. Not rocket science or genetics, just a matter of priorities.

that's exactly what my b/f would say 2 me when he started getting me into the sport. when i'd complain i was too tired or didn't feel like it he'd say it's gotta be like brushing ur teeth. it finally sunk in, and now i'm seeing the results. i think i'm the one and only female in my entire extended family who works out, and i consider it one of my life goals to prove to the rest of my family that having a fat a$$ does NOT have to run in the family :)
