If you had to choose one complex carb to have with your meals which would it be?

I choose Oats. I don't even cook them just throw some milk or water and splenda on them and eat like cereal

sweet potatoes baby!

In terms of nutrition the ranking would be
(1) Butternut squash
(2) legumes, such as kidney beans or red beans (see their ORAC scores)
(3) sweet potatoes

And grains later (barley/oats being the best). Brown rice is just calories

Peas are best seen as a sugar

butternut squash (which I LOVE) is a better source of slow burning complex carb than oatmeal/brown rice or sweet potato?

they are all good. I think people overthink diet too often when trying to bulk tho. Just eat everything in site and ur gonna get BIG :)

No I think it's mod/high GI, but is very high in nutrition (made me go yellowish last year though as I was having 1+ kilo per day). U have to eat a lot to get cals though - like 45 per 100 grams

Back in the day when I was competing I used to make a puree of broccoli and butternut squash. I got so damned tired of chewing food lol all that chicken and tuna, etc. The puree was sooooooo nice and sweet and yummy tasting. Made the dieting ALMOST bearable.

Maybe I'll bring jars of baby food to work and freak everyone out.

Lunch will be three 6 jars of chicken and peas and 5 jars of sweet potatoes

Sweet potatos rock. When I worked construction I worked with this guy thats was like 70 years old and smoked like a damn burning tire. But every day he would pull a raw sweet potato out of his over-alls and chow down on it.

Sweet potatoe - awesome low GI carb for loading days

Oats are my primary carb source. I am Italian so I have to binge on the whole wheat noodles a few times a week. I will have the occasional sweet potato when I go out to eat.

Interesting theory. More than half the world's population live on rice...and have been for thousands of years.

There is far more to rice than just calories.

My choice is oats, but I prefer a wide variety of complex carbs.

My understanding is that rice is not a nutrient dense food at all, it has very low trace minerals and that largely depends on the soil upon which it came. It provides energy in which most people live on it by, but not much in the way of nutrients.

thats not fair when 1/2 the worlds population is in one country and they are typically of smaller stature then the rest of the world

Boooo brown rice is loosing. I love rice. I've been making a rice recipe from Needto's book and I love it.

Try this little experiment

Measure 1C of oats and whatever the water amount, cook it up and eat it all. then eat your protein after that. How full do you feel? If you were like me, very since 1C of oats cooks up to almost 2 full cups of oats.

Using 1C dry oats and about 1 cup of milk (let it sit for about a minute to soak up some milk and they soften up), 2 splenda, 1tablespoon raw sunflower seeds and 1 tablespoon flax meal has been my staple for the last 3 months and I love it.

I don't feel full and bloated like I did after eating whatever 1C oats cooked up to (usually almost 2C), and you get all the benefits of the 1C dry oats at half the volume in your stomach

This is from my meal chart:

thanks alot man :chomp:

Oatmeal. Can't say I like it, but it's quick and easy so I eat it most everyday.
I hate rice, with the exception of fried rice with Chinese food.
I'm from the north so I wouldn't know what a sweet potato tastes like.

When dieting on little portions - I find that brown rice is not filling, I am hungry after eating it.

I love oatmeal and have eaten it every morning for the last 8 years. YUMMY!!!

I also eat ww pitas. They are made with ww flour, and are great when dieting. I don't get bloated from the ww breads or ww pastas, so I still incorporate them when dieting.

Last time I dieted I ate sweet potatoes 4x a day for 20 weeks. I never need to eat sweet potato again! :)

Thats true. Oatmeal is more filling than rice on a calorie for calorie basis. I guess thats why I eat so much brown rice when I'm bulking because I can eat more of it without being full.

you can throw oats in a shake or into almost anything and mix them with a lot of things. try mixing brown rice with a shake.... lol

GI is irrelevant when you combine your carbs with ANYTHING. Fat or Protein. Tat will back me up on that, I learned it from her. It makes perfect sense too.. That being said.. I like Oats in the morning, Sweet Potatoes with my steak, and White Long Grain with my Chicken/Fish/Beans..

I eat all three all the time, but if I have to chose one, it would be Oats.

The glycaemic load of oats is the lowest
I believe it also have the most protein per 100g of product
I just think eating oats regularly is boring.....
It's a tossup between the brown rice and the sweet potato in terms of insulin response

Probably irrelevant anyway since the margin of difference is pretty low and no evidence of GI and body composition.
In terms of quantity I like the potato

Whats wrong with white rice? Is brown rice better?

brown rice should be unprocessed or whole. I would go with any whole brown rice. All white rice is proccess or what's called refined and is lacking in some macronutrients. Many refined carbohydrates the body breaks down too quickly. In this regard , some people feel the glycemic load or insulin index of refined carbs is close to glucose....

sweet potato is my fav- 1/2 plain baked sweet potato w/ egg whites & spinach on the side for bfast is awesome! Oats are good too, sometimes I mix in frozen blueberries/fruit. Lee Haney's pro-plex has sweet potato powder in it,takes pretty good for sweet potato lovers.

Old fashioned oats all the way!! Get a $10 small 4cup mixer, pour in a cup of oats, grind to fine powder, put into shaker with a scoop of protein and 16oz milk
= 79 carbs, 50g protein, and 23g fat, best mass shake to have twice a day... tastes like a milk shake too!! Good for guys in college. Take one to school, buy the milk at one of the shops and your good to go

I used to eat alot of brown rice... That was when I voted in the poll. But I love oats now more than some cheat foods! I look forward to my higher carb days just so that I can eat oatmeal!

Ive come to like oats so much, even if I wasnt on a controlled diet I would be eating them. I even have two of my girls putting em down for brerakfast!

I prefer sweet potatoes. There's a lot that I can do with it than oats or brown rice. I can just boil it and while steaming hot, add lots of cheese. I can also bake it or fry it with brown sugar.

crinkle cut sweet potatoes french fries... slightly over baked dipped in italian dressing or horseradish mustard.

Sweet potatoes!

Anyone ever tried to put sweet potatoes into a protein shake? I'm thinking you could cube then bake them, that way they would blend easier... Don't know why it took me so long to think of this! I'm going to bake some up tonight!

Brown rice gets my vote..oats tends to make me feel really bloated and sweet p I think I'm burnt out on..

Oats are good in a shake with some whey and a banana, blended up. Otherwise for taste, you can't beat sweet taters. I usually steam up 1/2 tater with my veggies....tastes amazing...

I eat all 3. Oats for breakfast, sweet potato mid-morning pre-workout, (workout at lunch time) protein shake post-workout, brown rice mid-afternoon before the evening meals of meat and veggies. This way i enjoy the benefits of all 3 complex carb sources and keep some variety to the diet.

im all sweet potatoes it gives me that dry look, brown rice makes me flat, oats just doesn't taste good to me

Rice is our staple food and I would definitely choose brown rice over oats and sweet potatoes. It provides the energy that I need for the day.

here is a little tip i do and i hated oats. i love them now. taste great, u just add 100g of frozen berries ( thaw them for 12 hours nite before in fridge). i get a mix of them in a pack at a store that contain blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries etc. i firstly cook the oats, then add some cookies and cream protein powder, a little milk and cinnamon, then add the berries. try it tastes great.
