Missing you on here!

Ready to get to the gym today zed. Question for you. I am going to move up some in weight today. I have stopped bringing my cell phone in the gym as my log and have started Carryin a small notebook so I can see what I did the last time I did the same set. Here's my question. In trying to move up in weight do I still need to manage to do 12 reps? So I've been doing 2 sets of 12....when going up in weight is it feasible to do 12 on the first set and then go up in weight and then do however many reps I manage in my increased weight? Make any sense? Suggestions? Thanks man

Good! I feel it is better with writing down your workouts. Then you can just put em in a file drawer and lok back and see what was working for you whenever you want.

Yes until we move you off this workout.
So I've been doing 2 sets of 12....when going up in weight is it feasible to do 12 on the first set and then go up in weight and then do however many reps I manage in my increased weight?
For your current workout I would rather see you continue at 2x12 worksets. Remember this is only a stepping stone getting your body ready for the SL 5x5. The reason that I want you to do this higher volume is for your joints and connective tissue. To prepare it for the stress of the 5x5.

gymjunkie is a well seasoned lifter and he is getting beat up from the SL 5x5. I dont what that for you or for sugazombie.

I konw its hard for you but disipline yourself to keep with this program for say around 4 weeks or so (not including any more breaks). If because of the holidays you need to have another break then I feel we should add that time onto the backend.

Gurl I just really dont wanna see you get sidelined due to unnecessary and avoidable injury. Believe me it just totally sucks.

Great post zed!! Completely understand. Thanks for responding. Also no more breaks for me! We are staying home for Christmas so I'm Done traveling for a while!! So no more skipping out. I know it's been tough with the breaks...I get into a really good groove in the gym and then I'm gone for a few days or a week so it makes me feel like I'm starting all over again. No worries on me being patient! I've got the rest of my life to work on this body so I've got all the patience in the world! ;). Not really but you know what I mean. So should I not be moving up in weight? Or just slowly move up while still being able to do 12 each set?

Add what you can on a weekly basis. If that 2 Lbs fine, if its 5 Lbs thats fine too. I would not expect to much more then a 5 Lb increase at best tho.

Hey jen! Do you use the smith machine for overhead bbl press? I'm going to start working hard on my upper body and we seem to be similar in strength.
 
jennifer778, I'm in Canada- far far north of you :).
Jen10, for OH press I use a barbell but not on the smith machine as the movement does not go in a strict straight line.
There is a curving movement to it, where I have to move my head a little bit and tuck in my chin to get it past my face on both the up and down swing.
It's my opinion that it would be less functional to do it on a smith machine due to a limited ROM.
Plus you wouldn't be strengthening those stabilizer muscles which are crucial for shoulder strength and health.
If it's too hard, maybe use lighter weights until the shoulders are stronger.

That and start doing free weight for squats? Again that's the only exercise I ever use smith machine for.

Ha!! Give it a try!! I am struggling at 7 minutes....doing all that stuff as fast as I can, back to back. Whew!! You can do it!! Yep trying to decrown the cardio queen!! ;)

Yep late nite action for me is a regular activity. Need to get more sleep. Sometimes I can sleep really well and sometimes it's just straight up insomnia! What were you doing up so late!?

Well I should be more specific on the pull ups. I can't do a regular unassisted pull up. So I use a bar and do them from the floor. That make sense? What do you mean with your towel on the bar? Maybe you can tell me how to do a pull up your way!
 
Ok Thursday did 8 minutes met con. Whoooo!! Did 10 minutes stepmill on a moderate pace.

Did legs yesterday (Friday). Will pull out my folder and type it up and post at some point today. Going to go for a moderate walk/run for 30 today or tomorrow.

Since you cant do the whole thing yourself you get to use your legs to help...but only just barly enough to get you up to the bar.

Ok here we go,
Reach up and grab the overhead bar., Height really not too important.
Now of course you wanna with your pull with your shoulders all you can but also use your legs to kinda spring you up.
BUT
You wanna be tipping your head way back and arch your back to help you do so. This puts much more emphasis on your lats and mid traps. Its gonna be like you wanna hit that bar with your boobs. But go easy on em...their delicate you know!:D

Fight like hell going down, keep your back arched and head tipped back and fight every inch of the way down.

Repeat!

If you dont understand or have questiosn put em up!
 
Not in Florida! Flurried a couple times. I've seen it before but it was 75 here today

I stayed in Florida 2 wks I loved it it was beautiful. Me and my gf are going to go one year.

Going great. Steadily moving up on weight and feeling good. I think I've posted everything except legs.
Today is push. Every Tuesday ad Thursday Doing met con and sometimes 10-20 minutes of stepmill afterwards...but very slow pace. Just because I'm only getting in 7 minutes of met con. Also every weekend I am doing one long walk (sometime shuffle) outside. Following the plan.

Did u get my questions about the pull ups? I might need a different explanation. My little brain needed more help. Do I put a chair or bench or something under the pull up bar? Do overhand grip right? I get the part about my back arched and neck back.

OH gurl.....I would rather see you drop the stepmill. You dont realize what the 7 minutes is doing to your metabolism. MET CON stands for metabolic conditioning. Really and seriously only do the MET CON or do the stepmill but not both. YOU CARDIO NUT!!LOL.

Of you need to, to reach the bar yes. But if you dont need it to reach the bar then no way darlin.
Then you only give a little hop up, but you are still using your shoulders for the most part. Dont use your legs for the whole upward range of motion. Like I said just a littel hop at the beginning. Let me know if you need more explanation.
Do overhand grip right? I get the part about my back arched and neck back.
Actually you can alternate between sets if you wanna overhand/underhand. But either way focus your mind on pulling with your lats and mid traps.

Sounds good to me..about 5 x 5. I will definitely go up next time on leg press. I have been so sore (for days) after doing legs that I kinda stopped goin up for just a bit. Really wanting to move up in weight some. Looking forward to push exercises today. I've gotten where I really enjoy doing the push exercises (used to not). Funny how things shift around.
 
How do you do SLDL? Sorry bout that...

Another idea for conditioning for pull ups is to use an incline bench...you put one foot slightly resting at the top of the incline and just use that as an extra stability and push to get you up, if you need it. Or use the foot to get you up and then do the negatives on the way down to help strengthen yourself. It's a goal of mine too, to be able to do them but I still haven't reached it yet. You just have to be careful of injury by pushing too hard on these. Patience and time and you'll get there. :)
 
I really need to start working up to body weight wide grip myself. This gave me a reminder and some motivation.

Lol!! Sorry!! Figured itd be easier!! Sorry zed! I know I'm hardheaded!!

Ok I have my knees slightly bent..ever so slightly...legs about shoulder width apart. Feet straight. Bend over keeping a flat/straight back (no arching) with abs tight...moving the bar as close to my legs as possible down stopping about to the laces on my shoes and then come up.

Does that make any sense?

Jen now you got me wanting to do pull ups!!! When I was training for OCS, I had to do a 70 second flex arm hang, so never really focused on actual pull ups... If I wasn't already warm under the covers, I would get the pull up bar out of the garage and give it a go! Lol! You sure know how to motivate me!!! ;)

This is just what I wanted.
This is mostly good...but do this.
As you lower your bod, concentrate on reaching out and touching someone with your butt. You wanna move your hips backward. Then as you bring yourself up, you wanna bring your hips forward and raise your bod by flexing your glutes.
Only go as low as is comfortable. This is for yoir hamstrength, not so much a stretch. Some stretch but not a ton.

Sadly, I'm not doing them right now. I tore my tricep in two places early this year and am still rehab'ing it. It created a few issues into my shoulder (who knew the tricep connected in there) so I can't do anything like that. It's been a long journey of recovery but I'm hoping I'm near the end.

Another idea I've read about is just hanging from the bar and lifting as much as you can..almost like hanging shrugs. Supposed to help build up the strength but who knows!! LOL

Yeah I used to do that lol after a workout they feel that they are stimulating the shoulders well !!
 
Come on!! I say we plan it one day. That's be cool. We could just all admire each others muscles. Some more than others! ;). (meaning y'all would be admiring mine less because they are still babies!!)

Lol jen! Babies are still pretty! That'd be awesome to get together. Especailly when summer hits! I've got access to a condo in panama city beach, it's always a blast there!

I've got it stuck in my head now too! In combo with LMFAO I'm sexyand I know it! Best is when it comes on when you're doing good mornings or SLDLs!

Sorry about your triceps Cg! That sounds painful!! Is that a hard area to recover from? Ew!! I'll try those ideas! Thanks for throwing out some ideas! I appreciate it! I'm going to get some pull ups done somehow, eventually!!
 
Hanging shrugs are good stuff!
 
All 3, Wide, med and narrow. Use mixed grip so you can stay up there awhile and chalk.
 
So...did 8 minutes of met con today. Felt like about 3". I really wanted to do more cardio but I did not! See zed..I am listening!!! Just afraid I'm gonna start putting on fat. I can tell with trying to lift more that my appetite has gone through the roof.
Maybe it has nothing to do with my lifting. Just know I'm starving all the time!! Tomorrow is pull exercises!
