i've (finally) started strength training! i had someone show me how to use various machines at the gym and i am going to be consistently strenth-training, in addition to my cardio.

thing is, i'm not quite sure what and when i should be doing. my goal is to lose weight and tone up, and i was wondering if you could give me some advice and tips. i was hoping one of you more experienced ladies could give me some advice on what to do and when. it would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean by strength-training? Resistance training or like Powerlifting?

I'm guesing if you want to "tone" you mean you're going to do some type of a 4 day hypertrophy type split kind of thing. <---That's the techinical term for it. :D

"Toning" is the Cosmo Mag way of saying, "Gaining muscle, and losing fat to expose the muscle." This is largely about diet.

What kind of split do you have in mind? What's your diet looking like? Did the person at the gym show you around the freeweight room, or just "machines?"

:)

scour the boards for the specific information you are looking for. start with workouts, diet, training splits, cardio. this will allow you to pinpoint where you are lacking in information. hit the training board for info on exercises, etc. diet board for specifics on what/when to eat.

any and everything you could possibly want to know. you'll get more variety of opinions on things that have been posted in the past and can ask more specific questions afterwards.

there is no, "3 sets of 12 reps, doing such and such exercise." definitive answer, its individual to your goals and level of fitness. trust me, i hear it daily. "tell me what to do", its not that easy. a 3 minute generalization isnt personalized programming.

elitefitness is a huge board, exploit all its areas.

happy hunting.

:)

that's what I was gonna say...

I recently bumped a thread called, "what about cardio," which includes a well rounded split, diet info and some great general info as well. I'm not sure how "beginner friendly" it is, but it may be worth looking into.

thanks guys, i will be searching for all that information. :)

right now, my goal is to slim down and be less flabby. it's not to get big (and i hope i'm not offending anyone in saying that because that is DEFINITELY not the intent!)

how often do you recommend doing strength training?
should it be done on the same days i do cardio or alternating days? suggestions, tips?
