Wow....
For the first time ever on the internet, I'm about to share my deep, dark secret past....
1) I was 4'11" and 96 lbs. my Freshman year in High School. Sports were obviously not for me, unfortunately. I would have been killed.
2) However, I did grow up on a farm since I was 8...throwing hay, carrying water and feed, moving posts...
a strongman's dream, I assure you.
3) The summer
after my sophomore year, I grew 6 inches and gained 30 lbs., primarily of muscle. You could say I was a bit "late" in the developmental area.
4) I started lifting that summer, as well, and lifted throughout the remaining years of high school and college with absolutely no instruction.
And now, for the true reason that, while I was in college, I had a 34" vertical, squat 405 once (Junior year), deadlifted 405 the first time I tried it (Junior year), and power cleaned 225 the first time I tried it, all at a weight of 173-176 lbs. It's the reason I have my hip and shoulder flexibility, and why I can still reasonably squat and have a "decent" overhead squat.
Here we go:
I cheered in college. Yep, I threw women around and did stunts. I was an All-American, and my stunt partner was 135 lbs (which is a
heavy stunt partner). The prep for a stunt (no matter how you toss the girl) is
extremely similar to the jump in a power clean. Think about this very seriously: it's Dynamic Effort work 6 days per week, for 2 hours per day, from August (started at Football 2-a-days) to the end of May (competition season for Nationals). It actually makes for some great training discussion, if you'll seriously consider it.
And, now, I'll sit back and see how this unfolds...
