Nelmsjer's 2006 Journal

anotherbutters said:
The squats (and IP) look good Nelms. I see what you mean about those spotter bars. Damn, they're high!

What is truly sad is that, with the exception of IP and me, I have literally never seen anyone go low enough to even consider worrying about hitting them. :worried:

Today's workout was cardio again. We did the 2.25 mile run, and I got 7 seconds faster... 20:58. All in all, this has really been a great week. This is the first week that we have eaten strictly for the entire week (one cheat meal that consisted of Mongolian barbeque and 2 white macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies, which still didn't get our calories over our daily limit) AND gotten in 6 days of workouts. Now, it's just time to be consistent and patient as we wait for the fat loss to kick in.

The goal is 190 and 8% bodyfat. If things go as planned, I will look DRASTICALLY different than the last time I was 190 (during my first few weeks of the 5x5 in November). That is 13 lbs. away. A lb. of fat per week would put me at the beginning of June for my goal, assuming no muscle gained or lost.

Patience, constistency. Patience, consistency.

I can't view the pics but as usual you look pretty thick, especially your back. You're going to be monsta when you get done cutting.

IIRC, you were around 208 at your heaviest a couple months back? What're you at now?

Also, you're still setting PR's so that's damn impressive to me.

Ok, here are pics.

I feel leaner, but I don't look leaner. Kinda' sucks. Oh well, I'll just keep leaning down with diet and lifting hard. :)
It's great you feel this way, just another way to judge your progress ... you know this AND are on the right path. Your PR's are great, and your squat ... well YOU already know what I think about that ... IP is very lucky :rose: & vice versa.

I agree with

Thanks for sharing some pics! FINALLY ... there will me no photo shopping with this Bunny ( ) . Keep up the great work, your log is fantastic.

If I cut properly, I will be the biggest I have ever been at a lean bodyfat percentage. In addition, I will also be the strongest I've ever been. At 32, I just think that's pretty amazing and a huge testimony to proper training and diet.

Now, if I can just add the athleticism (POWER) that I had in college (36" vertical - my little 5'8" self could dunk a women's basketball) and the flexibility, I'll be pretty amazed and will have learned a tremendous amount more than I thought I would.

I'm currently fluctuating between 202 and 203. And if I don't keep setting PR's, I'm going to have to switch the training around until I do. I wrote in a thread the other day that I fully intend to deadlift 500 at 190 lbs., and I WILL do it. I have some thoughts on what training MAY be necessary to make that happen, but we'll have to get to that later. ;) I'm working out some theoretical stuff in my unstable brain. :goof:

I am certain we will have some discussions down the road.

Thanks for the compliments on everything. Mr. B happens to be very lucky, as well. I hope he knows it! :)

Photoshopping??? What's that?

Great video - another PR - woo hoo!!

And I think you do look a little leaner that when you were here......

Keep it up, you know, that "C" word.

Nelms, just keep going and forget the numbers ticking around on the calendar. I started lifting on-and-off in my mid-twenties and I was in the best shape of my life in my early thirties and, after a layoff, pretty much got it all back again around 38 or 39 before life pushed me sideways again. You lose some recovery ability as the years pass but don't let anyone convince into the mindset that you can't keep making progress for a very long time yet.

As always...THANKS and some K to you! Hope for the future is ALWAYS a good thing! :D

Excellent workout today. Had to push hard on squats. I am sure it is a combination of squatting about 2-3 inches lower than normal, dieting, and including cardio last week. On the other hand, I had a blast with power cleans and actually jerked the last rep of my last set! It felt awesome! I really feel like I need some coaching on this one, so it will be a priority when I get back to the States. It is also something I'm not entirely comfortable teaching, yet, so it will be good for my nerdiness factor. Finally, I also varied my grip during the first 3 sets of bench, ala blut wump. Why? Because he's cool. Fear him, dammit. He can multiply like nobody's business.

All sets were done with 5 reps. Today's numbers are brought to you by the letter E and the number 17.

Squat: 175/215/260/305/345

Bench: 125/160/190/220/253

Power Clean: 105/125/155/180/205 (jerked the very last rep!)

Weight: 201.2 lbs.

Today's workout was cardio. 10 20-second sprints with 40 seconds rest, followed by 5 minute jog. 4x5 Needsize abs. I think I may finally be ready for the 5th set next week.

Hope everyone is doing well. :)

Thanks, ladies. :) IP, it's a good thing you're proud to be with a big nerd that randomly thinks up boy band names. I mean, what are the odds??!

blut wump is most assuredly never coming back after that kind of fiasco.

IP, just watch that he doesn't start to spike his hair.

What really gets me here, and I can sympathize with Nelms that some kids stole his E17 before he got around to using it, is that AnotherButters knew about them. Can anyone explain that and leave AB with his dignity intact?

AB, I believe you've been called out. Feel free to use my thread to explain, as I believe several people will be eagerly waiting for an explanation. ;)

On with the journal...

Today's workout was a bit of a slow start. I got all my lifts, but I was dragging at the beginning. My balance on overhead squats was not quite abysmal, but it was close. My form on push press was lacking...just no groove. Then, the deadlifts started, and everything went great.

There will be no sponsorship of today's journal. I have fired my marketing department for the last mistake and am currently reviewing and accepting applications. Choose your letters and numbers with care.

All sets done for 5 reps.

Overhead squats: 105/130/150/170 - not heavy, just wobbly

Push Press: 95/115/135/155 - I actually read this wrong and thought I was supposed to do 155. It was actually 150.

Deadlift: 230/275/320/368 - grip was poor on 320, but finished. Mixed grip for 368. Felt great.

Looking ahead to week 7 (currently on week 3), I admit to wisps of doubt. The current schedule would put me at weights beyond what I've really ever considered. I normally don't like to admit to limiting thoughts, but they are creeping in. I know the mind has an amazing power over the body, and it looks like I will be depending on it to work for me. Hmmmmm......

Running was the agenda for the day. In another thread in the Women's Forum, I very briefly discussed the Tabata protocol. That propelled me to consider doing the first few 20-second sprints in that fashion. So, today, IP and I did the following:

20 second sprint, 10 second rest, 20 second sprint, 10 second rest, 20 second sprint
40 second rest
After that, we did 7 more at our normal 20 second sprint, 40 second rest. We followed up with 6 minutes of jogging, instead of 5. We both felt strong today.

I also started fat burners today, so perhaps that contributed.

Did it. Needsize 5x5 abs. Strict. Motivated by the Bunny and the fact that my wife does 5x10.

Time to graduate from hands on the chest to hands behind the head, now.

actually, time to graduate to plate on the chest... :artist:

HA! Thanks, guys.

I'm going to go with behind the head because my next method is actually blut wump's...no joke. Plate on the head. Holding it there increases the lever arm for the weight.

When I place it on my chest, I feel like there is no load after about halfway up, and that's holding it as high as I can on my chest.

:wavey: to both of ya'!

Well, if you look back, you'll see I cunningly pointed them out in a question, leaving my knowledge of their actual existence questionable and my dignity distinctly intact.

Besides, I exclusively work out listening to Take That ;)

If today's workout is any indication of my future, it's looking bright. :)

Everything was easy. I'm not using the term loosely. Everything was literally easy. Last week I posted a vid of my squats at 345. I did 355 today, just as low, and did it faster and more confidently. Bench was a breeze. Power cleans were great, and I jerked the last rep again... 210, which is a new PR for me. Anyway, I've got to believe that some of this is from the fat burners and the moderate stimulatory effect.

Hey, I'll take it. Last set in the group is for a triple. No backoff set.

Squat: 175/215/260/305/355

Bench Press: 125/160/190/225/260

Power Clean: 105/125/155/180/210 - PR jerk at the end

It's freaking too quiet on the boards on the weekends. Drop by if you get a chance. Otherwise, have a great weekend!

No doubt. When I first discovered Redline I thought I entered a new era of training :) Caffeine is an awesome enhancer, but you build up a tolerance so quickly to it. If I wasn't a big coffee drinker now, I could cycle in caffeine to coincide with my PR attempts and probably eek a few extra pounds on a few lifts. But my coffee habit of two 20 oz. cups a day has rendered pre-workout caffeine next to useless.

Nice job there. For me personally, it's always an official milestone when there's either a 'new' 25 or 45 on the end of the bar. That keeps the goals 'meaningful' yet not so far off that I lose sight of them. Eg: got 500 even on deads, next goal: 545 (5 plates and a 25) even though I'm really after 600.

Thanks, and the bolded is exactly how I feel. Next squat triple is 3 plates and a new 25 on each side. :) I'm ready!

Congrats on the new PR and positive gains! That is AWESOME ... (sorry IP) But I don;t even wanna think about your squats being any BETTER than that video... you know why and we'll leave it at that.

You continue to blow me away ... & inspire me as well. Thank you for that. Good bro ;)

Nice workout, really jealous of your squat. I want it!

Yep it's always nice to hear that 'clunk' instead of a 'clink' when you slap the weight on the bar :)

Thanks, Bunny, not just for dropping by, but for the compliments! I'm honored and amazed that I inspire you, so I'll do my best to keep it going. :)

Hmmmmm....I'll have to see about my next squat video...I'm thinking that I'll wait until it's 385 or 405 for a triple...

I can't wait for 4 clunks on my squat and 5 on my deadlift and 3 on my bench...

We ran, yesterday, on our 2.25 mile loop. I did not do well, and IP did great! I got 21:30, which is my worst time, so far. My hamstrings and butt felt tight for the entire first mile. After that, they loosened up, but I just couldn't make up how slow the first one was.

Week 1: 21:05
Week 2: 20:58
Week 3: 21:30

Today, I'm exhausted, and I actually took time off work yesterday, relaxed, and slept like a rock last night. If I don't start feeling better soon, I'm headed for another nap...

Looking back at my journal, I have some weird PRs today. I'm saying it's strange because the day before I left vacation, it was a Monday...but I did this Friday's workout. So, I have triples that are PRs that I got on 27 February that will not be PR's this week. All sets were done with reps of 5.

Squats: 185/225/265/315/355 - PR - Rep 5 was s l o w ...

Bench Press: 130/160/195/225/260 - PR - No problem. :)

Power Clean: 105/135/155/185/210 - PR - Felt the groove and jerked the last

I may cut out Saturday's cardio so that I can make my squats next week...

anotherbutters said:
Nope, no matter how many times I read that, I remain confused.

Congrats on the PRs, I think! :)

LOL!

I'll try again. ;)

The Monday before our vacation, which was 27 February, we were beginning week 4 (which, now that I am back, I am currently starting this week). Knowing we would not be working out as regularly, I decided to up the intensity and do the Week 4 Friday workout (with triples) on the Monday before vacation...

So, when I came back from vacation, IP and I reversed a little and started at week 2, so that we could ramp up again. So, I am now back at the SAME week 4 that I was on before vacation. Which means that I have already done the Friday workout that is coming up (but I did it 6 weeks ago on a Monday). What I had NOT done is the Monday workout (which I finally did today). So, I had some PRs today for the Monday workout, but I will NOT have any PRs on Friday (because I got them 6 weeks ago), which normally isn't the case.

Additional info: I was 200.4 lbs. today. S L O W L Y leaning out. I'm very happy that I'm power cleaning and jerking greater than bodyweight. I know it's not spectacular, but it's a beginning. :)

Thanks, and be sure to check out some other journals. There is a TON of great information here that coincides with your training philosophies. In addition, there are some monsters on this board that are some of the nicest and knowledgeable people I've come across online.

Thanks again! :)

Not a great workout today. I got through the sprints fine and actually felt "light" and powerful, but I noticed a dull ache at my hamstring or glute by the time we were finished. So, I did not do the 5 minute cooldown.

Too many things on my mind...

Aww man, I KNOW that feeling ... *Bunny* vibes sent your way :rose:

Any more squat vids?

Where's the wifey to make ya feel better?

IP has been doing AWESOME and supporting me TONS. She's definitely my support when I put too much pressure on myself, which is really all that I'm doing.

Long story short: we don't have a ton of time left in Iraq. We already have a job lined up for the US (working together again...how freaking cool is that?!!), but I'm a bit of a long-term "dreamer", personality-wise. So, I'm always thinking, developing business plans, researching, etc. Sometimes, I get antsy and want to start executing on the plans...but I can't, yet. The current one I'm considering has amazing potential, but I can't do a single thing about it from where I am.

It's funny. I get myself all spun up, when the reality is that everything will be 100% fine. In fact, everything will actually be amazing, whether I ever pursue something additional or not. It's just that my mind never quits. So, it's not that I'm worrying...it's that I'm frustrated because I'm ready to move on and take action.

Ok, enough of that. This is a weightlifting journal, dammit. This place oozes testosterone, and heavy metal music is blaring. Bars are bending and blood veins are popping out of people's elbows. Records are being shattered, and lives are being changed.

Back to business. And never forget: IP rocks.

I learned over my first 5x5 run that gaining 27 lbs. without running the entire time was an exceptionally dumb idea. :FRlol: When I first "ran" again, I'm pretty sure I was causing stress fractures...to the concrete. The next day, I hurt quite a bit. I think I even wrote in my journal that I will no longer bulk without running twice per week. If it means more calories eaten, so be it.

Today's workout was all kinds of jacked up.

I forgot the workout sheets with our numbers, thinking IP had them in her bag. Well, I was wrong. Oops.

So, today's workout was on the fly, and happened to include 3 PRs. Everything was for 5 reps.

Overhead squat: 115/140/160/185 - PR by 15 lbs. I got video, but I didn't know my camera wouldn't rotate the picture, or that Windows Movie Maker wouldn't either. So, no video.

Push Press: 115/135/160/175 - PR by 20 lbs. Oops.

Deadlift: 205/265/345/375 - PR (I don't think I've done this before)

Then I tried to deadlift 475, which would have been a 20 lb. PR. I didn't get it. I got it off the ground, but knew I wasn't going to lock it. I was frustrated with this, because I got 455 2 months ago. It's kind of hard to get to 500 when you can't get 475 first. That, and I haven't failed on anything in quite a LONG time.

Losing fat sucks for strength gains...

Bodyweight: 201.4

Nice work on the OH stuff.

Pretty tough pulling a 1RM after all that reppage, though, so I wouldn't be too disappointed.

Cardio today wasn't the greatest. I think I'm going to take Saturday off completely from training, and just do 5 days this week. My right tibia is starting to have a dull ache, and I felt the dull ache again in the glute/ham region.

Here's hoping tomorrow's Heavy Triple Friday goes will! :)

Well, the women's forum rocks and she's there ... and I follow her log ... so ... of course she rocks!

Anyway, just had to drop in on this heavy metal and blood stuff.... Ya have any cool scars or anything to show us?

;) ;) ;)

Cardio today wasn't the greatest for me either. I'm going for another round tonight to see if I can focus a bit more. Some carbs today helped.

TGI Heavy Triple Friday!

Wow, 185 overhead squatting ? That's impressive as hell, I got knocked on my ass by 90lbs when I tried that lift. Great work

backing off on the cardio will let you recover I'm sure.. cardio enhanced recovery up to a point then it's all downhill ;(

WW, Tweakle, and G5.0, thanks for stopping by. :)

Tweakle and G5.0, thanks for the compliments. The thing is this: I know that you both could destroy me in the overhead squat, if you could just get the hand placement and shoulder/hip flexibility in place. Keep working it!

Heavy Triple Friday...coming soon! I'm getting nervous. I get to put 3 plates and a 25 on (clunk) for squats.

Fantastic job on the OH squats. I have never tried these, but you have just inspired me nelm. I'm gonna give it a go next DE day.

Nice pull too.

I went to the gym today in another crappy mood, but quickly turned it around and had a great day at the gym. Squats went smoothly, and I have video, again. Bench was nice, and power cleans felt great today. As a matter of fact, my second and third sets were snatch, instead. Since I had already done this workout a little while back, the only PR today is the 215 jerk at the end of the last power clean heavy triple.

So, today's workout was to a heavy triple. Sets are 5/5/5/5/3 with no backoff set (always time constraints).

Squats: 185/225/265/315/365 - Felt very comfortable - video at bottom of post

Bench Press: 135/165/195/225/265 - Will get my 5 on Monday

Power Clean: 105/135 (snatched) /160 (snatched) /185/215 - PR jerk on final rep

Squat triple video (365 lbs.)

Great looking deep squats. Also, you seem like you're going to be a really good snatcher....do you come from an athletic background? I ask because the olympic squats look really natural, and the snatches/overhead squats numbers are proportionately good, so the coordination, balance, explosion seems to come very naturally.

Wow....

For the first time ever on the internet, I'm about to share my deep, dark secret past....

1) I was 4'11" and 96 lbs. my Freshman year in High School. Sports were obviously not for me, unfortunately. I would have been killed.
2) However, I did grow up on a farm since I was 8...throwing hay, carrying water and feed, moving posts...a strongman's dream, I assure you.
3) The summer after my sophomore year, I grew 6 inches and gained 30 lbs., primarily of muscle. You could say I was a bit "late" in the developmental area.
4) I started lifting that summer, as well, and lifted throughout the remaining years of high school and college with absolutely no instruction.

And now, for the true reason that, while I was in college, I had a 34" vertical, squat 405 once (Junior year), deadlifted 405 the first time I tried it (Junior year), and power cleaned 225 the first time I tried it, all at a weight of 173-176 lbs. It's the reason I have my hip and shoulder flexibility, and why I can still reasonably squat and have a "decent" overhead squat.

Here we go: :worried:

I cheered in college. Yep, I threw women around and did stunts. I was an All-American, and my stunt partner was 135 lbs (which is a heavy stunt partner). The prep for a stunt (no matter how you toss the girl) is extremely similar to the jump in a power clean. Think about this very seriously: it's Dynamic Effort work 6 days per week, for 2 hours per day, from August (started at Football 2-a-days) to the end of May (competition season for Nationals). It actually makes for some great training discussion, if you'll seriously consider it.

And, now, I'll sit back and see how this unfolds...

Nice story, Nelms! I'm SURE that cheer workout was a good one! I have no negative comments WHATSOEVER on that subject. I find it EASY to believe that you are comfortable enough with yourself that you can share that openly! :)

YOU HAVE MAIL!

BTW, I also figured out how Windows Movie Maker can rotate video. So here is my overhead squat with 185x5. I lost balance on the first rep. Oops!

Nelmsjer OH Squat 185x5
GOOD LAWD!!! And I know you know the lawd is good ... :)

That is .. well AWESOME ...

Nothing like firing chicks around as if they are as light as a feather !!! WOO HOO!!! IP! You lucky little devil you .. How IS that oxy!!!

HAWT! Nice Squat man!

The athleticism involved in NCAA cheering in this day and age is comparable to gymnastics from what I understand.....also, man, that 34" vert will take you FAR with the olympic lifts.

DAMN, NELMS!!!!!!! That ain't NO JOKE!!!!! :eek2:

At least we know someone can CARRY BUNNY after I give her a bunch of alcohol! :lmao:

How is the standard vertical jump executed and measured? Are you allowed a dip and knee-bend, etc? I was wondering how to measure my own.

Hey, blut wump! Without vertical jumping equipment, the best way is to find a tall wall with no obstructions next to it (or above you; i.e., low ceiling ;) ). With a piece of chalk or pen or marker in your hand, stand next to the wall, flat-footed, and reach up as FAR as you can and mark the wall! Then, just go for it, and at the height of your jump, mark the wall and measure the difference between the marks. Do it 2-3 times with adequate rest in between.

The countermovement (dip and knee-bend) is of vital importance for a great vertical jump. You're a smart guy, so I won't elaborate except to say "stretch reflex". Also, the faster you do the countermovement, the better the jump. People actually write entire books on this stuff, but those are the very basics.

Enjoy!

nelms --- totally awesome videos -- I did my little 45 plate squats tonite but in my mind I saw your video w/ ATG and well, I felt sort of wussy. My only comeback was that I was doing Giant Sets so I didn't feel so bad about it.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone (guys and gals). I appreciate them.

BiggT, I wish I could say that I still have the 34" vertical...I don't. I can now touch the rim, but that's it. So, I'm a bit under 30" for right now. Nonetheless, you are absolutely right. :)

*Bunny*, people have no idea how fun cheering is. I could do without all the "rah rah" crap, but I would STILL stunt all day long, if I could. And the jumping is a blast, believe it or not. It's not easy. :) Besides, throwing chicks around is cool. :) IP and I have played around with a few stunts (keep it clean)! :lmao:

SG, I am fully prepared to carry both you and Bunny, along with IP. Why do you think I've been training so much?!?! Admittedly, having P around will help even things out. I swear, once he gets to training consistently, he's going to be freaking massive!

Jim, I can't lie. I know that it looks like my speed is good in the videos, but let me tell you something: it FEELS heavy!!! I am purposefully not doing cardio this week so that I can make an attempt at the 365x5 on Monday...

Curgeo, can you give me a short discourse on kneeling squats, please?!

Thanks! :)

Kneeling squats are really something that is not done very often because when trained it really takes a lot of weight to do it. You place a pad on the ground, kneel on the pad inside a power rack...have the hooks placed where you can unrack it behind your traps/upperback like you would a squat. You basically rise up on your knees and the lower yourself down on your haunches...then rise up again, thrusting your hips forward.

It really works the hips and helps to condition them for wide stance squatting. Higher reps are really optimal b/c once you go over 5 or 6 plates (which is easy to do due to the short ROM) it really gets uncomfortable on the knees.

Does that sum it up okay or should I elaborate a bit more?
