Nelmsjer's 2006 Journal

I heard it was someone's birthday, so I thought I would drop in and show some luv to one of my favorite people here.

Have a wonderful birthday

:arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant: :arty: :elephant:

Oh and for your present I'm eating lots of potatoes, sweet potatoes and rice just for you!!!
:p

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! The only wish I have for you is that IP gives you a SEXY lap dance .....

**HAVE A GOOD ONE.... and may your life be filled with warm memories and happiness***

Hey, guys, I just posted this in the C&C Forum, so I'll post it here, too:

You guys are awesome...thanks SO MUCH! My birthday was excellent, and a big reason was because of the support and congratulations I received from EF...

For those that don't know, my wife (IcePrincess) and I are in Iraq, which isn't exactly the most festive place to have a birthday. We work 12 hour days, 7 days per week, so having the board hopping yesterday about my birthday was really great and cheered me up.

Thanks again to everyone. I've given out too much K over the last 24 hours, but I'll come back around.

Cheers to EF! :)

3 sets of 10 sucks, compared to 5x5.

Ha I just finished the 1st week of HST and my lungs were still burning over the weekend. And these were easy weights.

Oh and Happy Birthday. Between you, BW and myself we could make Cocoon III: The Awakening

The fact that you even make it to the gym regulairy let alone make the lifts you'remaking is beyond me. How do you find the time to get to the gym?

I'm glad this board cheered you up on your birthday.

Seriously, a marked improvement. Damn, Nelms, looking good. Need to show P when he comes back.

And thanks again, you know why

Well I posted on iceprincess's log from her pics that you had a good birthday, but now we know so did she!

Great job!

Alright, I've been slacking on the journaling. Like I said before, doing 3 sets of 10 just is NOT as fun as 5x5. There are just no 2 ways around it. :( But, it is necessary right now, because I just had too many joint issues and was starting to move TOO slowly!

So, the last 3 workouts...

Wednesday, 5 May: 2 sets of 10, 1 set of 8

Squat: 135/205/265
Bench Press: 155/185/225 (only got 7 on the last. I had 8, but knew I wasn't supposed to be pushing too hard the first freaking week, so stopped at 7. Suck.)
Bent Row: 135/165/175

Monday, 8 May: all for sets of 10

Squat: 155/215/255
Incline: 140/170/180 - difficult
Lat Pulldown: 110/125/140

Today, 11 May:

Squat cleans: 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 245x3 (PR by the way - and actually still pretty easy) - ok, I'm getting to the limit of my ability to control the bar back down. I don't have bumper plates. Also, and this is going to seem SO trivial, but I assure you it is not. My pinky finger comes off the bar when I bring my elbows up. It is a wrist flexibility issue that is pretty normal (my understanding, anyway). Well, I have 2 issues:

1) I can't just dump the weight. This means I have the forefinger, middle, and ring finger on the bar...and that is it...to try and control 245 lbs. back down the ground. Negative. Not very successful.
2) If I were to continue to the jerk, how am I supposed to get my pinky back around the bar, so that it doesn't get f-ing crushed? That is the whole point to my regrab. The problem is that I barely clear the bar with my pinky on the regrab, to the point that I have now taken CHUNKS of skin off of my pinky distal knuckle FOUR times now. I am to the point where I literally think it is going to scar.

I have to fix my freaking pinky, for heaven's sakes, and it is pissing me off!!!

Ok, back to the workout, but I would TRULY appreciate any help.

Speed work: all for 6 sets of 3 (time constraints)

Deadlifts at 235
Bent Row at 135
Bench Press at 155

That's all...I may hit another thread and copy the pinky issue. How freaking embarrassing...

Just caught something else.....you said 'bring your elbows up'. When you catch, you're pulling yourself underneath the bar into a full front squat as fast as possible and whipping the elbows as fast as possible, you want to do it with as much exaggerated speed as possible, you can never be too fast. The elbows should be where they need to be by the time you catch the weight at the bottom.

You might want to do some drills with the catch, if you can do 1 rep front squats without the pinky slipping off, you should be able to clean, even multiple reps are comparable to singles as you're resetting the bar.

Yeah, I see what you mean on the elbows up part. I catch the bar in the bottom with my elbows already up, but I will concentrate on making it even faster.

What's interesting is that when I DO catch it with my pinky in the right position, my front squat from the bottom is slower and more difficult. When I catch it and my pinky slips off, for SOME reason I am in a better position, and I just stand right up. Annoying as heck. It's not even an issue of "oh...my pinky is off, this is going to be hard to stand up". It's "wow, that was easy. (looking over) Crap, my pinky is off." or "gosh, that was slow...but it's in my hands" Ridiculous.

More practice...more flexibility...and more pop after the front squat for a regrab if it is absolutely required.

Looking Good there Nelms!! Great pics!!

Hey, all...exceptionally busy again. I'll hopefully post up the workouts in the next few days. I am finally "enjoying" the higher reps and not feeling like I'm going to die. It's not as fun as 5x5, but it's not quite as miserable.

Take care...be back soon! :wavey:

12 May Workout: 2 sets of 10, 1 set of 8

Squats: 155/215/275
Bench Press: 155/185/225(7)
Bent Row: 135/165/180

15 May Workout: all 3 sets of 10

Squat: 160/215/275
Incline Press: 145/170/180
Lat Pulldown: 115/125/145

Today

Final set of 2 squat cleans at 250 lbs. (PR). Pinky doing better. Duct taped it, today. :)

7 sets of 3: Speed work with Bent Row (145) and Bench Press (155)

REALLY enjoyable day, today. Left with lots of energy and happy with the cleans. Still room to go. :)

Good workouts, and nice cleans. Have you hypertrophied any during this 'light' period? I find that when I back away from high volume and frequency with heavy weights for a few weeks, that I get a little growth spurt in terms of muscle/bodyweight.

I THINK I am. At the very least, I am losing bodyfat, so I honestly don't know if it's the greater muscle size or the fat loss that is helping me look better. I'll take either or both!

I dumped the first squat clean at 250 today. It was only the second time I've dumped the weight, and I was clear down in the bottom of the squat, so it wasn't too crazy at all. :) :lmao:

Complete side note I just wanted to share with you and everyone: IP did 12 below-parallel squats with 115 Monday. It was awesome to see, and I was seriously proud. :)

thats very impressive squatting for IP.....and as you train the olympic lifts more and more, especially snatches, you'll learn that 'dumping weight' and 'olympic lifting' go together quite well, lol.

I can't wait. I want to do lots and lots of cleans, jerks, and snatches. :lmao:

When I hit the States, I've already been offered a job as the Assistant Manager for an upscale raquet club (basically a country club without the golf course). If they don't have a platform and bumper plates, I'm buying them with my own funds. Again...I can't wait.

I hope you take it and transform that snooty country club into a full squatting, weight dumping, chalk cloud filled, bloody shinned place to workout :artist:

Seriously though, is it in a place you want to live? That'd be sweet...

Anyways, nice squat cleans. What's your best FSQ? I'm curious if that will be your limiting factor. Or maybe it doesn't really work that way.

And congrats to IP on the squats. Props to her. You rarely see a woman free squatting at my gym, much less full squats. Usually if they're squatting they're on the smitty or doing dumbell wide stance squats. My wife has done 135 x 3 full squats and other women think she's crazy like she's a pro athlete or something.

Today's workout: reps are 10/10/8

Squat: 155/215/285(easy)/345(3)
Bench Press: 155/185/225 - I have only got 7 reps for the last 2 weeks on this. Today, all 8 went up easily, and I had at least one and probably 2 more to go. Not complaining, but you just never know...all of a sudden things improve!
Bent Row: 135/165/185

Have a great weekend, and God bless! :wavey:

I left today's workout log in the car, but let's see what I can remember... Everything for sets of 10.

Squats: 165/225/285 - still going strong with these
Incline: 155/170/185 - I think I am micro-loading next week. My incline sucks.
Lat PD: 120/130/145 - I'll go up on the last set next week, but this was tough.

I need more time in the gym....and can't wait to get back to the States.

My a$$ is here, GG. :)

With IP being sick for a bit, we skipped a few days in the gym. It was a nice refresher, and it was even nicer getting back in. Yesteray's workout went really well, and I still feel like I have a way to go on my lifts. Good stuff. :)

Sets were for 10/10/8

Squats: 175/225/290 - I think I'm getting stronger/adapting physiologically faster than I'm putting on the weight. These keep getting easier.
Bench: 160/190/230 - I followed this up with 225...10 times! 3 reasons I'm excited: 1) I haven't done that since I was 24. 2) I couldn't do more than 7 for 2 weeks in a row at the beginning of May. 3) I did that AFTER my "heavy" set at 230. My intent was just to do some extra reps for volume, but ended up pushing out 10. :D
Bent Row: 140/170/190 - form is always rough on the last 2 reps of these, but by no means ugly. :FRlol:

I definitely FEEL the extra set on bench this morning. It's not painful or terrible, but it is certainly present and letting me know it is there. :)

Awesome, you went and did!

BiggT, that is a very great question. Let me fill everyone in on some things going on...

I can't really give specific dates, for security reasons, but IP and I will soon be on vacation in Ecuador. So, we don't have a lot of lifting time left over the next week or so. While in Ecuador, we will not have fitness facilities, so we will be making due with bodyweight and partner exercises for 2 weeks. Thankfully, we are in a cutting stage for the purpose of an EF "meet-up" in July. Anyway, after the 2 weeks in Ecuador, we only have 2 weeks back in Iraq before we go HOME. That means a lot of organizing, packing, etc. We'll still be getting our lifting in, but it will be an unbelievably hectic 2 weeks.

When we return to the States, we don't have a home, yet. So...for various reasons, we are traveling for literally 1 month when we get back, before we actually move to our final destination. At THAT point, however, we will be able to work out whenever and however often we want, since we will both be helping to manage an upscale racquet club owned by the Best Man of our wedding. :)

Lord willing, life is about to be even better...God is good. :D

Jens and Duckie...it's great to see you here. Thanks! :wavey: :rose:

Everything was easy today. I am now at 195.8 lbs. and loving the leanness. All sets were for 10 reps. Incline and Lat Pulldown were super-set.

Squat: 175/230/290
Incline: 155/175/190
Lat Pulldown: 120/125/150

Finished with 20 minutes of incline walking and burned 180 calories. Yesterday, IP and I did incline sprint intervals for 45 minutes, and I burned 750!

It looks like you have some interesting time ahead for yourselves and that it's going to be fun for you both. I can see you're looking forward to getting back to the USA.

Today I tweaked my wrist a little when I didn't get my elbows up fast enough, and it caught my knee on the squat clean at 225 lbs.

So, I did what every normal male would do: added more weight and set a PR at 265 lbs.

He didn't wuss out...it is just that I have to work twice as hard has him to burn around the same amount of calories as him!!! :) Due to the 70lbs DIFFERENCE!!

Thanks, duckie! :wavey:

Today's workout: First 2 sets for 10. Last set for 8

Squats: 180/235/295 - finished with a rock bottom 405 single. :)
Bench Press: 165/195/235 - tried for a single at 295 and failed. Oh well. I'll get it back when I switch back to 5x5 in a few months. ;)
Bent Row: 145/175/190 - this was pretty easy today

Finished with 10 pullups. Weighed 197.4 today. I must be having sympathy bloat. ;)

Good question. It is the lowest 405 I have ever done, for sure. I've gone below parallel before with one, but this was definitely all the way down.

On the other hand, I did 450 to parallel (judged at a comp) about a month ago. So, however we want to look at it. :)

Sooo....we can't fly today. :( Just paid $100 to change tickets, and we'll start praying we can fly tomorrow.

Suck.

Hey, all! Just a quick note to say we're safe in Ecuador and went for a fasted group of sprints on the beach this morning. Then we had fresh fruit, egg white omelet, and tons o' water. :)

Life is good! Everyone enjoy their week and weekend! :D

I hate having a weak end.

I hear that the SA countries have a lot of beaches and sons of beaches.

Glad you're having fun. Don't stop.

Nice to hear, i'm sure you'll have a nice weekend hangin on the beach.

Hey, all! Nelmsjer here (in IP's account). Thanks for the notes and messages! :)

Running on the beach every day is about the best we can do right now. We also do 7 flights of stairs several times per day. Things are going well.

The beer and pizza is very good. :FRlol:

Back in Iraq approximately the 24th or so...

Playing on the playa.
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside...

Take care, both of you. Get back safely and have fun.

Thanks, Duckie :)

Well, all, IP and I are back...for 8 more days. Then it's back to the US for good, where we will be busy for about 6 solid weeks of traveling. I don't anticipate many more journal entries for quite a while - at least until mid August. I will keep checking in, however, so everyone keep lifting hard and enjoy life. :)

Hey, I just posted this in the Ladies forum, and it is just as true over here. So...here it is.

It's been 23 months for me, and 13 for IP. This may sound strange, but I think it's going to be a little bit of a rough transition. Working 84 hour weeks is all we know. In a sense, we've been "programmed" that our life is our job. It just kind of naturally happens out here. It's not good or bad, it's just how it is. :)

So, the time off to see my son (pic below) and then Treil's show and travel with Mermaid and P are going to be some "therapy" for us to get back into reality. So, as weird as it sounds, we would appreciate any prayers as we get back into the real world and figure out what to do with an additional 50 hours per week.

Thanks to ALL of you for all the support you've given us while we've been over here. I can honestly say that EF has been one of our stress relievers and sanity keepers. The quality of some of the people is transferred quite easily through the keyboard, and we are thankful for it.

Even better...we get to meet some of you soon.

So, until then... thanks again.
