How is the standard vertical jump executed and measured? Are you allowed a dip and knee-bend, etc? I was wondering how to measure my own.

Hey, blut wump! Without vertical jumping equipment, the best way is to find a tall wall with no obstructions next to it (or above you; i.e., low ceiling ;) ). With a piece of chalk or pen or marker in your hand, stand next to the wall, flat-footed, and reach up as FAR as you can and mark the wall! Then, just go for it, and at the height of your jump, mark the wall and measure the difference between the marks. Do it 2-3 times with adequate rest in between.

The countermovement (dip and knee-bend) is of vital importance for a great vertical jump. You're a smart guy, so I won't elaborate except to say "stretch reflex". Also, the faster you do the countermovement, the better the jump. People actually write entire books on this stuff, but those are the very basics.

Enjoy!

nelms --- totally awesome videos -- I did my little 45 plate squats tonite but in my mind I saw your video w/ ATG and well, I felt sort of wussy. My only comeback was that I was doing Giant Sets so I didn't feel so bad about it.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone (guys and gals). I appreciate them.

BiggT, I wish I could say that I still have the 34" vertical...I don't. I can now touch the rim, but that's it. So, I'm a bit under 30" for right now. Nonetheless, you are absolutely right. :)

*Bunny*, people have no idea how fun cheering is. I could do without all the "rah rah" crap, but I would STILL stunt all day long, if I could. And the jumping is a blast, believe it or not. It's not easy. :) Besides, throwing chicks around is cool. :) IP and I have played around with a few stunts (keep it clean)! :lmao:

SG, I am fully prepared to carry both you and Bunny, along with IP. Why do you think I've been training so much?!?! Admittedly, having P around will help even things out. I swear, once he gets to training consistently, he's going to be freaking massive!

Jim, I can't lie. I know that it looks like my speed is good in the videos, but let me tell you something: it FEELS heavy!!! I am purposefully not doing cardio this week so that I can make an attempt at the 365x5 on Monday...

Curgeo, can you give me a short discourse on kneeling squats, please?!

Thanks! :)

Kneeling squats are really something that is not done very often because when trained it really takes a lot of weight to do it. You place a pad on the ground, kneel on the pad inside a power rack...have the hooks placed where you can unrack it behind your traps/upperback like you would a squat. You basically rise up on your knees and the lower yourself down on your haunches...then rise up again, thrusting your hips forward.

It really works the hips and helps to condition them for wide stance squatting. Higher reps are really optimal b/c once you go over 5 or 6 plates (which is easy to do due to the short ROM) it really gets uncomfortable on the knees.

Does that sum it up okay or should I elaborate a bit more?
