just as support for what DG and Sassy have said. tracking exact amounts is the key to dialing your diet in. it may seem tedious at first but it truly gives you a snapshot of how much you are taking in each day. it teaches you where you over eat, and where you under eat. After a while you almost see where your metabolism is slowing down and where you are revving it up. you'd be surprised how many people say they eat "pretty good" and either under eat, have terrible macronutrient ratios or over eat. I'm currently working with a couple people who have told me that they've never eaten so much in their life...and are losing weight.
for now focus on getting regular meals/snacks in throughout the day. learn portion sizes that fit into your calorie goals so you are satisfied with the taste and amount of food you are eating. the biggest challenge most people have is making the food enjoyable to eat, which in the long run changes what you are doing from "I'm dieting" to "this is how I eat." It keeps you off the yo yo and gives you back the control you had when you were younger by you manipulating your own metabolism.
best bet is to get your diet in check, then work on your training, then look to supplementation as the icing on the proverbial cake.
hope this helps.
