(muay thai question) what to do against a rusher

a couple kids in my muay thai class tend to rush very sloppilly... i am a better fighter but thier overaggresiveness takes away my ability to use kicks... my biggest strength, i cant use elbows or knees and have trouble keeping them backed up.... what to look for in somoene that rushes with thier legs..... or with thier arms. please address seperately thanks!

Stepping into them with the Upercutting elbow is fun . Uppercuts in general seem to Thwart Rushers .

Triangular stepping at a 45 Degree angle to their outside Line is also useful Like /--- or \---

The thing is that yo ucant let them start backing YOU up just because they want you to . Screw that , Step to the side and Forward , or make them eat Uppercuts for lunging in !

we dont throw elbows in sparring but ill practice this with bags sometime... i think a general uppercut would work just as well and a triangle step might be effective..... im assuming what u said about side kicks is just a kick with my front leg? i use these to keep tem backed up and when they get moving alot i LOVE to counter thier kicks with kicks to knock them on the floor.... going to tarin in about an hour and ahalf ill try these out

Teep them in the chest or face, let them rush and use their momentum to clinch, uppercut, sidestep and hook
i've never actually gone for a clinch from sparring...... how shoud i?

I rush forward but I don't usually do it sloppily (tho sometimes I get away from myself)
the biggest thing I have diffiuclty with is if your calm and jab at my face
I think in MT the Teep/Push Kick advice would be good to
you also have to consider if you want to Clinch or not what do they charge forward to do?
I move forward because I'm solid at Clinch range so if I go to come to you and you clinch with me as your defence that's really ideal
for me, not for you
if they want to charge forward and stay outside at the same time then clinching them might be good but you said something about no knees or elbows is that a sparring rule or are you just not any good at knees and elbows?
the best thing I can tell you is to try and stay on the outside and use angles and quick Jabs/Teeps to make them less eager to rush
also avoid the corners like the plauge

good at elbows and decent at knees.... sparring rule

If youre Decent with your Knees and Elbows youre probably already working Well in the Clinch . Clinch Range just means the Distnce where you could reach behind the opponents neck and Palm it

i know i just dont usually actually try to clinch when we are sparring.... i will next time we spar.

why Clinch? you can't throw knees or elbows holding the back of his head is just going to move your hands out of the way for him to punch your body
how is your inside punching?

my hook breaks ribs

make sure you sidestep before you throw the uppercut, or else you could eat a sloppy punch when they rush you. Also, when you sidestep it opens a nice angle for a mid-kick where the shin lands flush against thier stomach.

If you can time it, just blast their legs on the way in, and that will make them think twich about always rushing in.

ah ur from pittsburgh, where do u train

I train some in Pitts at Powerkick(with a couple of other competition fighters), and also train at a gym closer to where I live now in Altoona (Progressive Arts). Your not too far from our Altoona gym if your in St College. I didn't know of any gyms up that way, so let me know if you have any competition fighters up there, and I'll come up and move w/you guys.

then when he comes forward to forward to
slip inside and have a close Clinch range boxing match w/out actually Clinching
if he wants to grab behind your head great, that'll open up his ribs
but try not to break his ribs you wont get much practice with him if you do that

Frong puch kick right on their hip, side step and jab. Or my favorite front knee. I don't throw it out there, I just bring it up so they run right into it.

I am an Ajarn in Muay Thai, National Champ amateur (retired after holding for 7 years) and now pro. I own a school and actually am holding a fight this weekend. I have taught karate boxing and kickboxing anbd wrestling. I am also the VP of the association that handles the sport. Thats my info incase you want to know who are the peeps giving you instructions.

Personally, Wing Tae followed by side clinch, add a slap knee to the sternem then a straight knee to the quad, eject the rusher with arms, leaving a jab out to keep % of retaliation to a minimum and add a Teep into hip area to fold him. That will end the rushing for the rest of the fight. Other option, though much less effective, is a Stab knee to rusher into front hip flexers orfloating rib into elbow if you cannot elbow, then in to clinch, spin 180 and eject with a low leg roundhouse to calf for takedown.

Side stepping and uppercutting wont work, and backing up is NOT an option. You also need to defeat them mentally too. These techniques are meant to do just that. They may carry a higher % of risk for you, but the payoff is far greater.

Im sure you will get many opinions, find the one that works best for you.
btw if knees are not permitted, then you arent doing muaythai, you are doing kickboxing. hehe! Just a side not.

If you need to subtract knees, I would suggest wing tae ( running sidestep about 6 inches off side of opponent into a round house hitting at the thigh level acrossed both thighs. then turn in 12 eject with arms and add push kick to pelvis area!!

What I have used on MANY occassions is a slight switch to the outside and then a nice roundhouse with my shin to their mid-section - if you time it right it will land flush and their rushing momenteum will make it hurt them even more. They won't bother rushing in anymore.

Basic footwork should also be looked into - never get causght going backwards in a straight line either..

One person whose fights you should download/watch is Peter Aerts from Holland - he used this kick for about 6 years in K1 - before it went to shit.

Ay Wing Tae is the Running kick. You step slightly to the outside of the open as you run-step into them with a round house across both of their thighs. Dont bother going any higher, as you will be caught and turned into a plough and end up on the floor.

best of luck! BTW: this kick takes practice, especially with getting your timing and footwork to work together, as you have to react to his movements and time them on his speed.
