Max number of chins...

Assertive Guy

Just a begginer...

..without addictional weight added. 18 months ago I could get 20 reps with a little left over. (I'm talking each rep to lockout of joints, deliberate pause there at the bottom to add difficulty). I used an underhand grip a little wider than shoulder width apart. I'm getting a chin/dip/abs station thorugh the post soon so I can start up again. Oh, and my bodyweight at that time was only 160lbs. Im now at 236lbs (28% bf).

I don't think you're suposed to go to complete lockout with chins as it could lead to a possable tear of the bie.

Nahh - just dont drop into it and you'll be fine...

If you use weight, don't hang all the way down and let the weight go onto your connective tissues. Keep tension all the way through or you'll risk injury.

Unweighted, I doubt it matters.

Why the hell are you doing underhand grip wider than shoulder width? The point of an underhand grip is to bring the biceps into the movement more. Give them a direct line of pull. Putting them outside of shoulder width doesn't allow for this. Move it in so your elbows are coming right along your sides.

Now if you're doing that and you're still at wider than shoulder-width, ignore that I said. Just make sure you're getting the maximal line of pull for the best results.

that must be pretty uncomfortable too and i'd imagine he'd get about as much benefit as a wide-grip with palms facing away.
