Mass Shooting at Virginia Tech...

(CNN) -- One person was killed and several were wounded in two shootings on the Virginia Tech university campus in Blacksburg on Monday, The Associated Press and the university reported.

A hospital spokeswoman told AP that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

The AP reported that one person was killed and one wounded in a shooting at a dormitory. Another shooting at Norris Hall, an engineering building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene Video)

"Police have one shooter in custody, and as part of routine police procedure they continue to search for a second shooter," the university said in a written statement.

The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs Video)

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.

"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

too bad legal, law-abiding students can't pack heat on campus. too bad liberals pass laws that get others killed.

anyone notice that the places that have the most guns (like gun shows) have the fewest number of shootings? gee...i wonder...

My cousin goes there. I'm on the phone with my aunt right now. She didn't even hear about it until I called.

how could this be?! they banned guns on campus, so this can't be true.

hello, people...guns were banned. we all know banning guns keeps everyone safe, so i call BS on the story.

Leave it to doink to shit on a sympathy thread by bringing up his political biases.

Like bloody hell I'm going to live on a campus with a bunch of 18-year old alcoholics allowed to have guns.

You play by different rules living on campus. Anyone who doesn't like that is free to live off campus or go to another school.

STFU you stupid cocksucker.

Campus police said there was only one shooter and he is now dead. They are unsure if the shooter was a student.

The shooter was "wearing a vest covered in clips was just unloading on their door, going from classroom to classroom … they said it never seemed like it was going to stop and there was just blood all over," Harrison said.

exactly what i said. don't try to be the first guy who says, "dude, this isn't the movies, shit doesn't happen like that." it's pathetic.

whether or not some person legally purchased a gun is a moot point. the fact is, they banned firearms on campus, so how could such a thing possibly happen if all guns were banned?

are you telling me zero tolerance policies and strict gun control really doesn't keep me safe? OMFG that would mean the politicians have been lying...oh my, what is the world coming to.

i always wondered why the areas of the country that have strictest gun control laws also have the highest amount of murder, rape, and robbery....

Assault rifles shooting 5.56 NATO rounds actually have manageable recoil -- they're basically .22 caliber rounds. However, the velocity and round fragmentation within the body make a bullet in the chest pretty much fatal without body armor. The M-16 can effectively engage targets at 300M, so walking into a classroom filled with targets at less than 10 M is going to be a slaughter, especially if the seats are all level and not theatre-style. A bullet that misses the first row will keep going and tear the head of some poor guy in the last row.

And the feds probably took their sweet ass time before entering the building to render aid to the victims.

He ran back to his place and his friend from Bloomberg called him and he did an on air interview with Bloomberg describing the situation.

He also stated that it was an asian guy who went nuts over his gf, strapped on some kevlar vests and fucking bandoliers (Pancho Villa-style) and just went ape shit around campus and was killing people execution style.

Anyone have the link to college editorial that was posted in a thread where the student was outraged about a cop on campus with a gun?

And GJ, guns have the curious ability to help prevent this type of thing. Not to mention in order to obtain a CCW you must show proof of trainging, military or competition.

I tend to agree with Poink on this one. I am snatching up the AR I want as soon as I can because every anti-gun moron will use this as a rallying cry.

The problem is that there's in no psychological test you can administer when purchasing a gun. I would say that an individual should be referred to some mental health clinic and given a test before purchasing a gun???

I don't know , but banning the gun would cure the problem

why? so the only people affected will be the law-abiding citizen can be disarmed, while the low-life, crackhead, rapist/murderer will have one anyways?

yeah, the mayor of DC is definitely right...guns should be banned. just look at how well it is working for DC, which has the highest murder rate in the US (maybe second now, thanks to new orleans).

In that line of thought, there should also be a mental health test before someone gets a driver's license. Cars kill way more people than guns do every year. Or maybe we should ban cars.

There are lots of drownings every year as well. Maybe we should ban water too. It would save lives.

you can't keep bad people from doing bad things. bottom line. takes away the guns, they'll just make bombs. think everyone has a carriers permit in Iraq? doesn't matter. it's life. you can't prevent death. btw, 31 dead now? wow.

A man on my campus last week committed suicide by putting himself in front of a train. Just to think, he was obviously very unhappy and disturbed he could have chosen a different path such as this individual did.

Beyond this, I find it hard to believe that such an act like what has happened today is actually possible. Where was everyone while THIRTY TWO people were shot and killed? How many times did this individual fire his gun? How many times did he reload his two weapons? Keep in mind he shot himself, he probably ran out of ammunition (besides the last shot) in an instance like this.

So you missed the point completely eh?

Would banning water increase the amount of drownings? Banning guns increases crime.

Love that argument. Guns are designed to shoot things. They are designed for the express purpose of ending life. Cars are not.

its what happened here, martin bryant port arthur tasmania:As a response to the spree killing, the Howard government banned semi-automatic centerfire rifles, high-capacity repeating shotguns and high-capacity rifle magazines. In addition to this, heavy limitations were also put into place on low-capacity repeating shotguns and rimfire semi-automatic rifles. The Tasmanian state government attempted to ignore this directive but was threatened with a number of penalties from the federal government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Bryant

Madison (who, incidently, introduced the Bill of Rights) disagrees.

If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair.

But you go right out there and think that.

Charles Whitman killed 15 and wounded 31 with a shotgun and a hunting rifle at the University of Texas in 1966. These two weapons will never be banned. Even if all firearms were banned it would just force more "creativity" for the disturbed individual. I know we fundamentally disagree on the subject of gun control and I'm sure an internet thread won't change that. :)

I apologize.

james Madison did not foresee a nation where children would be gunned down in schools by wacko's etc. This is one case where I think the ideas of the founders does not apply since this is a different time and the USA has evolved since his day.

Anyway, a gun ban would seem to betray only gun totters anyway... How is it that self defense is limited to firearms?

I wasn't trying to disprove it.

But to take it a step further, you're ignoring environment when speaking of things like cars. Cars do not kill people because they are designed to. They kill people because of misuse and/or stupidity and/or circumstance, whatever. Guns do not kill people because of misuse or circumstance. They kill people because that's what they are made for. Hence, my comment that it's a silly comparison.

I grew up where every teenager I knew had access to firearms. I was given a .22 caliber rifle for Christmas when I was six. In high school guys had gun racks with guns in their trucks when they drove to school. We received three days excused absence for the first three days of gun season for deer hunting. The last murder was in the late 1970's and the guy beat his wife to death and set her body on fire for having an affair.

Prove to me that guns should be banned. You made a statement and offered no reason as to why. I won't try to help you think beyond your closed paradigm again.

Look at D.C. and San Fran post gun bans and compare the crime rates. Offer some solid proof that they should be banned.
