Liver foods

Thought this may be of use to anyone who has for instance done PH's, or anyone who drinks a bunch or does alot of NSAID's. All of these of course can be harsh on the liver. The liver is a vital organ....no need for explanation.

Here are some "liver friendly foods"....

Apples, artichokes, beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, figs, nuts and seeds, papaya, spinach, tomatoes and watermelon.

One surprising thing many may not be aware of is protein. Protein is vital for optimal liver function....the liver manufactures cholesterol. When the liver does not get enough protein to function efficiently it produces more LDL(bad cholesterol) and less HDL(the good stuff).

Think I was exaggerating about Tylenol? Read this....

Acetaminophen, known best by the brand name Tylenol. In the last weeks of last year, this ubiquitous over-the-counter medicine - the nation's leading pain reliever, in fact - was found by recent research to be the nation's leading cause of acute liver failure as well.

According to a recent Associated Press article, research conducted by scientists from two leading American medical facilities (the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center) concludes that NEARLY HALF of all cases of acute liver failures in 662 patients from 22 liver transplant centers over a 6-year span were caused by acetaminophen poisoning.

What's even more disturbing is the upward trend in the incidence of acetaminophen poisoning this research revealed. In 1998, only 28% of the study's liver poisonings could be blamed on acetaminophen

- by 2003, that number had ballooned to 51%. More than 7 out of ten of these victims died as a result. Also remarkable is the fact that 48% of these cases were from UNINTENTIONAL OVERDOSES, while only 44% were from suicide attempts (OTC painkillers are common approaches to self-offing)...

People need to be more aware that otc medications do have side effects and increased risk for adverse events when taken incorrectly. Ive seen parents give children under 7 adult doses(on the high range to). i then have to educate them about pediatric doses based on mg per kg(basicly they can get away with using a childrens tylenol). they have to read the instructions though, especially important if they consume alcohol while taking this.. Lifterforlife did mention some awesome examples of healthy dietary choices. Most people (especially on a bodybuilding message board) have a high enough intake of protein. i would not consider that a mojor contributing factor of liver disorders in the USA, an excess of protein if anything among americans would be detrimental. good post :)
