Legs Problem...

I HATE squatting. I do just about every other compound movement for bodybuilding. I was wondering if heavy leg presses would be just as good as squatting. I dont care about the total body developement, i just want leg development. I still do squat every week, i just want to know if its ok to lay off them and maybe squat once every 2 weeks?

Depends on your goals, if you truly want to add a decent amount of mass to your legs, then squats are the only way!

Do you have a mechanical problem with squatting? What is the problem with them?

You can always try box squatting...squatting on a box really helps to train your body to learn good squatting technique.

as needsize said the best way to add mass to your quads is squatting... any particular reason for not liking squats?

When I was a teenager I used to hate squats...I was terrible at them and it was just a pain in the ass.

The reason....my form sucked and I was using too much weight which made my form even worse.

Now I love squats...I look forward to them.

You have to relearn how to do them. If you need to put something under your heels then do it.

I put a five pound plate under each heel.

Unless you have some bad injury you really should do squats.

And its better to do them light and correct then heavy and bad form.

strong island: Very well said...

I think that it is better to do a moderate weight and light intensity set of sqats (Strength and Size wise) that it is to do a hard and intense set of leg presses... You just get more from squatting...

see many dudes with impressive leg development?

no

get it?

OK, from someone who has legs that are legendary, let me give you some advice:

YOU MUST DO SQUATS!

But having said that I think that most guys who develop their legs don't develop them very nicely. Maybe as a gay man I have a sense of aesthetics for male legs...and this is what I have noticed:

People's hamstrings are out of proportion to their quads.

If you want nice looking legs you have to develop your hamstrings. You can get impressive size in your quads but the key to nice looking legs is balance.

So many guys have big quads and flat hams. They look impressive but not attractive.

With the exception of squatting I never work my quads directly. My leg routine is essentially a hamstrings routine. If you do this hard enough your quads will end up being sore anyway.

In any case, this approach has worked well for me. Best of luck.
