prior to those sizes are girls sizes which range from 4 or 5 to some size I can't remember (because I wore it too long ago), and then on to 0 women's.
Junior sizes are also cut narrower in the shoulder and bust, too, though the waist sizes are comparable. (i.e. a 5 and 6 have the same waist size, but the 5 has a narrower shoulder and bust.) There may be some differences in inseam on pants, but at 5'4" I've never noticed them.
Girl's sizes run 7-14, though some some manufacturers make a 16 too, although judging from the cut and styles it looks to me like 14 & 16's are usually made for husky 12 year olds. Most 14 & 16 year olds wear junior's sizes.
For women who end up buying in the girl's department (and I used to be one of them, not cause I was anorexic, just small) there is a sad lack of decent styles to chose from, unless you don't MIND wearing a T-shirt that says "Boy Crazy" or "NSync". At 38, I think I'd better not.
Also, they can be too short or have daisies on them, etc, and not enough room in the shoulders.
That's where the 0 and 00 comes in. Many women of my acquaintance are only 4'10" - 5'4" and when they are proportional need a smaller size. Of course, there ARE petite sizes, which are also cut smaller than the corresponding "misses" size (i.e. a normal 6 requires an 8 petite), but they can be hard to find.
But - yes, they did "inflate" the sizes a couple of years ago for misses. They didn't inflate the junior sizes. So, if you wear a 6 misses, be prepared to look for a 9/11 in the juniors department (if you have any tits or ass to speak of).
