Keto diet unhealthy?

Where I work we have a new intern who is a fitness expert, going for her master's in excersize physiology (splng?) or something like that. She seems real smart and definatly knowlegable. Anyhow she claims that the keto diet will damage one's kidneys? I told her I drink like 1.5 gals of water every day but she feels very strongly its an unhealthy diet. Do you think their is any truth to this? I can see how it would stress the liver and kidneys.
Any studies that would show negative side effects from a keto diet, such as CKD or TKD?

doctors dont like ketos........ these type of diets aren't tried by doctors, most doctors recommend cal defiency diets...... i think its healthy enough......

the only reason it wouldnt be healthy is because youre not getting all the phytonutrients from veges and fruits... but the carb up kind of solves that - also make sure you drink a lot of water

some people say "well youre eating lots of sat fats and cholesterol" - you won't be able to store fat as cholesterol without an insulin spike, and if youre doing the keto diet correctly, this is impossible.

others will argue and say "you will be eating LOTS of protein and thats bad for your kidneys"

well, i eat 200g of protein on a keto diet and 200g off a keto, go figure.

*Sigh*

4Give me if im wrong but the tudies that found high protein intake to be bad for kidneys was perfomed on sedentary folk who had health and kidney problems!!!

An athlete has better body mechanics and the body in a healthy person is not stupid, it adapts to changes and if it gets more protein the kidneys can regulate this

ive been on a ckd for about 2 months..within that time i lsot about 40 lbs. gained stength and some mass. For cardio i did HIIT so i think that helped with the retaining of muscle...supplements, i been on xenadrine-rfa1 and taking protein..

IMO doctors/nutritionalist usually say that it is unhealthy simple due to the fact that they have been taught this and it has been pounded into their head a million times

No, its fine for the kidneys unless:
1) You have a preexisting problem with the kidneys then this diet can cause problems.
2) If you are too strict (hard to do short of starving) you can develop ketoacidosis of the blood. This will definitely damage the kidneys. Thats where the mixup comes in, people confuse ketosis (ketones in the bloodstream) and ketoacidosis (and increase in ketones that surpasses the acid buffers in your blood stream, a potentially fatal occurrence and seen in diabetics).
3) Ask the lady you work with what studies she bases her opinions on.

See if you can find a copy of The Ketogenic Diet by Lyle McDonald. It should have lots of references to research material.
Doctors help treat epileptic children by putting them on a keto diet - I don't think those docs would be putting children in harms way.

The kidney damage comment might be because high blood urea levels can be caused by too much protein intake as well as dehydration. Hey, too much of anything is bad for you!

I agree with supernav. Use the diet to hit your goals then switch back to healthy carbs...

Also if health is a concern get all your fats from flax/udos and fish oils as opposed to bacon and grease... This could actually increase your health - you will be losing weight and getting all the benefits of EFA's that the average diet is deficient in.

Take your vitamins.
