It is physically possible to bulk on a ketogenic diet. The book 'The Anabolic Diet' talks about bulking on a ketogenic diet. You take advantage of the insulin spike and the supercompensation of glycogen to your muscles from them being 'thirsty' during the carb depleting stage. The idea is that by emptying the muscles you can force them to overfill, and promote growth. The method is pretty much the same except that you eat above maint. calories the entire time, and you can take less time between carb ups if you want. The carb up is handled a little differently as well.. You basically eat anything you want during your recovery/carb up period, and try to get as many calories as possible in that time. You have to make sure you take enough time to be good into ketosis though, or you'll end up with fat gains. I don't really recommend it, because while the logic behind the way the insulin and glycogen overfill will work is sound, it's hard to get quality workouts while restricting carbs. I just don't like the feeling of trying to lift for muscle gains while my muscles and liver are glycogen depleted. I also wouldn't want to eat above my maint calories without carbs. The ketones become appetite suppressing, so it's hard for me to eat that much. If you decide to try it, let me know how it works though. I'd be interested in hearing some real experiences with it. Good luck.
