Karma?

I just joined this site and i'm still trying to get used to it but i don't understand how you get karma and and how you give it.
can someone fill me in on this

On the lower right of each post there is a karma icon (looks like the yin-yang symbol). By agreeing with a post you send good Karma, and disagreeing you send negative karma. You get Karma from others the same way.
The idea is to reward those who help others, and to deter those that do not or are negative.
