I do my squats on the smith machine with only 30lbs added , because that coupled with my current weight...it's a miracle that once I bend down I can even get back up.....

Hell girl I usually do not do squats and If I do, I'll use the bar (45 lbs) sometimes will add weight.
I would have some ripped thunder thighs if I started heavy leg work. (I am not saying heavy leg work will cause this for you or anyone, sure does for me
