Is there a specific insulin level at which anabolism is triggered?

Owie! They worked out with a tube running out of their legs?

And yeah, I agree, nice post - thank you :)

Is there any special reason they chose only phenylalanine, though? Besides it being one of the EAA's?

It doesn't make any diff. if there are a bunch of NEAA's in one's normal protein drink (as there would be) so long as all the EAA's are there in adequate amounts, yes? The 3g/3g study just says that 3g EAA's wasn't enough and 3g NEAA's didn't have any effect either way? Jus' checking :)

The phenylalanine was just used as a "tracer" of muscle turnover and fractional protein synthesis in the muscle. They can work out the net mixed protein synthesis from the amount of labelled phenylalanine incorporated into the muscle biopsy. They could have used any of the amonos that are normally incorporated into muscle to measure this, but phenylalanine is what is often used in these types of studies. In other words, they can calculate that if X mgs of phenylalanine is incorporated, then Y mgs of total muscle was synthesized.

Phenylalanine is used as a tracer because it is not oxidized or synthesized in the muscle. Thus, it is easier to figure out what has been incorporated or lost from the muscle.

i need some info on insulin?

hello, i have been working about for about a year and i have been taking creatien and amino acids and i tryed no2 .. but it didn't gave me such good gains, i would like to know if i can take insulin or not because who people have diabetcs they only allow to take it.. anywa how does insulin helps gain muscle? by taking insulin can u get cuts on the muscle? if anyone could help me thanx alot!

Taking insulin if you're not a diabetic is a really bad idea. By itself, it won't do anything except make you hypoglycemic, potentially put you into a diabetic coma, and make you fat.

In general terms, if you're fast blood glucose is normal and your HbA1c is normal, then don't worry about insulin resistance.

There seems to be a number of otherwise healthy, lean, very physically active people on this board that are concerned about insulin resistance. If your blood chems are normal, worry about something else. If your a fat, sedentary individual, then worry about insulin resistance, or if you're a lean Type II diabetic, worry about insulin resistance.

Subtle differences in how we respond to insulin within normal limits is unlikely to affect performance or physique.
