Is OHP worth the time

I know its an age old lift that reflects one of the most basic forms of strength however I am wondering if it is better off for me to do something else.

As of now my routine is

Monday Bench
Tuesday Deadlift
Wednesday Weighted Pull Ups
Thursday OHP??
Friday Squat
Saturday Weighted Pull Ups
Sunday

I want to really workout on my bench(what else is new?), I am thinking of scrapping OHP and making it a speed bench day. After speed bench I would do Incline Bench Press and Seated Overhead DP press following that. Do you guys think I could continue strengthening my shoulders using that routine?

its absolutely worth the time. your routine is similar to mine. and i would do it just like you suggested. if you group together your chest/tri/shoulders into one day, then bench one day then overhead press the next. i gave up flat benching a while ago and switched to incline, and i switch off between heavy inclines one day then standing overhead presses the next. when i do it this way my strength goes up way faster on both than if i was to do oonly one or the other.

You are training too much. 4 days a week max. How can you grow if you are always tearing down muscle. In my experience heavy ohp doesnt equal a big bench. Scrap it and do high rep db shoulder presses as an accessory. The most important part of a big bench is technique.

How about a heavy overhead press day with dumbell bench as an accessory , alternated bi-weekly with a heavy bench day with DB OHP as an accessory. I personally wouldnt prioritize the flat bench over the OHP...if anything I'd say the OHP is just as important.

The ohp is important if you want strong shoulders. This is not necessarily the case for a big bench. I personally feel it limits bench strength. This isnt a big deal for the body builders as development is all that matters. But for us that live by our numbers we cant afford to do anything that kills progress. So if you want a big bench stay away from heavy ohp, if your concerned with development than do them. This may not apply to everyone but for the majority it will apply.

Why would it limit bench strength? Because I could be doing a more valuable bench related exercise in the time it take me to do OHP? Or are you saying that the actually exercise weakens your bench.

OHP makes your shoulders strong and having strong shoulders can't hurt your bench numbers, if your programming is done right, my 2 cents

The extra work on the shoulders can hurt recovery and take away from bench progress. That is why the shoulder work should be done as assistance work and not for primary development. This only really affects people that do all 3 lifts bench, squat, dl. If you are a bench only guy than your shoulders arent being destroyed on squats and dl so you could do it as a primary movement.
